Starting Sunday June 14, a Carrboro resurfacing project will close Greensboro Street from Braxton Foushee Street to Oak Avenue most evenings.
Lane closures and operations for the NCDOT project are set to occur Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to a town release. The result of the milling and pavement work will be new road markings, reduced vehicle travel lanes, and a buffers for bicycle lanes. The project will expand about a month, depending on weather conditions.
Drivers are encouraged to stay alert while driving through the work area, particularly as closures will be implemented nightly. A pilot vehicle will also be on the road to help maneuver traffic.

The effort will contribute to the town’s coordinated efforts to liven up Greensboro Street and expand its bicycle network. Located along the central downtown corridor, the Drakeford Library Complex opened its doors last year, offering a new community hub and office spaces for local governmental departments and organizations. In 2021, the town updated its bike plan to focus on projects that would generate positive economic impact, protect the environment, advance equity, enhance health, and increase safety and livability.
The resurfacing project also follows Carrboro’s Vision Zero commitment. The town council adopted the action plan last spring, aiming to help eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries in Carrboro by 2030 through pedestrian safety projects. The town joined Chapel Hill in following the blueprint for road safety, whose council adopted a resolution in 2021.
