Actor Sarah Jessica Parker will deliver the commencement address for Northwestern University’s Class of 2026 this weekend, according to the university.
The actor, producer and entrepreneur will address graduates at its 168th Commencement on Sunday at Chicago’s United Center in addition to receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Arts at the ceremony. Parker is widely known for playing Carrie Bradshaw in the hit television series “Sex and the City,” a portrayal that earned her Golden Globe Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Emmy Awards.
“Sarah Jessica Parker has been a strong supporter of the arts and humanities for many years, and I am thrilled she will be our commencement speaker,” Interim President Henry S. Bienen said in a news release. “From starring in and producing film, television and theatre productions to her successful business ventures, Sarah’s iconic and versatile career speaks to the interdisciplinary approach we value and champion at Northwestern. I look forward to hearing her address our Class of 2026.”
Parker’s presence in the entertainment industry goes beyond the screen.
She launched the production company Pretty Matches Productions in 2005, focusing on scripted and unscripted content, and operates several business ventures, including an award-winning wine collection and the “Lovely” fragrance.
In 2023, Parker launched SJP Lit, a literary imprint “dedicated to publishing thought-provoking, big-hearted stories inclusive of international and underrepresented voices.” She also serves as a vice chairman of the Board of Directors for the New York City Ballet.
Along with Parker, the following individuals will receive honorary degrees:
Michael Graetzel – Doctor of Science – A professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, Graetzel pioneered research on colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals and their use for solar energy conversion and storage, according to Northwestern. Heather Headley – Doctor of Arts – Headley, a 1997 graduate of Northwestern, is a Tony and Grammy Award-winning singer. she won the role of Nala in the original Broadway cast of the Tony-winning musical “The Lion King,” originated the leading role of Rachel Marron in London’s West End premiere of “The Bodyguard,” saw immense musical success, among other feats.
