2026 AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING TRIALS

Monday, June 8 – Saturday, June 13, 2026 Sydney, Australia Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre LCM (50 meters) Meet Central Commonwealth Selection Criteria Pan Pac Selection Criteria Psych Sheets Live Results Live Stream Storylines To Watch Live Recaps: Prelims: Day 1 Final: Day 1

After an exhilarating first day of competition in Sydney at the 2026 Australian Trials, the first batch of athletes have been named to the Pan-Pac and Commonwealth teams (kind of).

In looking through the selection criteria for both meets, the Pan-Pac process is much more straightforward. A total number of 56 athletes, 28 women and 28 men, can be selected for the meet in Irvine, with priority being given to the top two qualifying athletes in individual events. After that, it falls to the 2nd priority, which covers filling out relays, with the medley relays taking the top swimmers in the 100s, and the freestyle relays potentially taking athletes ranked 3rd through 8th, although not necessarily in that order, as past relay performances and results can be taken into account. The last priority is for athletes who are under the qualifying time but not already selected to the team via Priority 1 or 2.

The Commonwealth Games selection seems to be similar but has some very interesting differences. For one, the team is limited to a max of 42 athletes, but there is no mention of a breakdown by gender. Additionally, while the first two swimmers in each individual event are the top priority, the relay selection (priority two) lists only the highest-ranked athlete in the 100s of stroke, and only the top three placed eligible athletes in the 100 and 200 free may be nominated, with those ranked 4th eligible for selection as a relay-only swimmer. The third priority is similar to the Pan-Pac team, stating that any remaining roster spots will be filled by athletes who finished under the qualify time and are not already selected to the team via Priority 1 or 2, but does limit it to just the 3rd place finisher.

However, there are more differences as the Commonwealth Games selection procedure goes into great detail about the Nomination criteria, specifically pointing out factor like “Swimming Australia is confident that the Athlete will be competitive at the Games;” [5.2 (a)(ii)] and “demonstrated good behavior including a commitment to training and attendance at training camps” [5.3 (a)(ii)] as well as “demonstrated compatibility with others in a team environment” [5.3 (a)(iii)].

That said, we will do our best to keep track of the roster and manage these lists going forward
