Steve Vai, a three-time Grammy Award winner who was voted the 10th Greatest Guitarist by Guitar Worldreaders, was born on June 6, 1960. The musician turns 66 today. Throughout his illustrious career, he has released 11 solo albums and has toured with Whitesnake, Alcatrazz, and David Lee Roth. He’s also recorded with icons like Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper.
Originally, his career was launched when he joined Frank Zappa’s band. In a 1999 interview with Steven C. Pesant, Vai explained, “I had gotten his phone number and I called it, and I was a kid, you know, like 18. And he accepted a tape from me, and he really liked it. I moved out to California, and I just started recording with him, and the next thing you know, I was in the band.”

Vai also spoke about his love of music and performing. “First and foremost, I’m an entertainer,” he said. “I want to get up on the stage, connect my heart with my fingers and give people something stimulating so that they can feel a certain fulfillment of their musical thirst. And for me, it just doesn’t stop with the note. I can’t stop there. When I play a note, it’s not just connected to my fingers, it’s like this whole… it comes out of my whole aura, and I like to be animated and theatrical.”
He continued, “It’s fun for me. It’s a release, a freedom, you know. And that’s what music really is when you’re on a stage like that. It’s the freedom to express myself. I’m very fortunate because there are people out there that get floored and they get a sense of fulfillment from it, and that’s a real honor.”
One of Vai’s signature tracks is “For the Love of God.” This instrumental guitar piece was from his album, Passion and Warfare, released in 1990. The song is six minutes long, with David Coverdale from Whitesnake speaking at the end. As one reviewer stated, “This piece is not just a musical track. It is transcendental art.”
