A drunk driver who critically injured a 5-year-old girl in Point Loma was sentenced on June 4 to eight years and four months in state prison. Additionally, Savannah Monique Taylor, 22, must serve an additional year in prison for an unrelated crime. On Sept. 6, 2025, 5-year-old Olive Tomasevic was on a scooter on a Liberty Station bike path when Taylor’s BMW struck her and dragged her before running into a steel bench. An almost empty bottle of liquor was found inside Taylor’s car. The young girl suffered severe injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma before spending the next eight months at Rady’s Children’s Hospital, said her father. She suffered facial fractures, intestinal fractures, and a skull fracture with severe brain damage, according to Olive’s father, Alex Tomasevic. For the June 4 sentencing, Alex and Leann Tomasevic brought Olive into the courtroom in a stroller so the judge could see her. “She came close to dying several times because of the defendant’s actions,” said Alex Tomasevic. “This is what life is like for her today. She can’t walk. She can’t use the toilet. She uses diapers. She cannot eat on her own. She has a feeding tube. She can’t bathe herself. She can’t attend regular school. She can’t talk. She can’t crawl into bed.” Taylor pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, causing great bodily injury. She also admitted to being out on bond for domestic violence in an unrelated incident of punching her girlfriend. “I see a tenacious little girl,” said Leeann Tomasevic. “She gets hours and hours of physical therapy. I watched the toughest of nurses cry when she was not looking.” Gary Puffington, the girl’s grandfather, described Taylor as “selfish” and said he hopes the crime “haunts her.” “We are so grateful that Olive is still with us,” said Olive’s aunt. Dana Deane.Deputy District Attorney Evan Anderson said Taylor was residing in a sober living facility when the collision occurred. Taylor’s attorney asked that she receive a 7-year sentence and that she be allowed to serve it in a fire camp, an option the judge denied.Taylor apologized for her conduct, saying, “How very sorry” she was and how happy she was when she learned that Olive had woken up out of her coma. Addressing Olive, Taylor said, “Even though I don’t know you, I will always care about you. I’m very, very sorry to your family.”
