First above all names: Not Shreyas Iyer, ex-cricketer names this player as SKYs replacement as Indias T20I captain

Shreyas Iyer is heavily considered the successor to Suryakumar Yadav as captain of India’s T20I team. Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly on the edge of losing his leadership role in the soon, in the coming days, and could be dropped from the side as well because of his long-lasting poor form.

Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India won the T20 World Cup 2026, defeating New Zealand in the final. There is no denying that Yadav did his captaincy job precisely, but it is his bad patch that is holding him back from further progression with the national cricket team.

Iyer and a few other players, like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, were in contention to be the next T20I captain for the Men in Blue. The recent reports indicate that although there were multiple names under consideration, it is now Shreyas Iyer who is in the front position to replace Yadav.

Former Team India cricketer Mohammad Kaif mentions that Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir had worked closely in the Indian Premier League for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to help the team claim their third league title.

Without Gambhir on his side, Shreyas Iyer proved himself multiple times as a leader. In two seasons with the Punjab Kings, he guided the team to a final during the 2025 season. Alongside the leadership burden, Iyer scored over a thousand runs as well for Punjab in these two seasons, proving his ability to perform under pressure, which is a much-needed element a captain should have.

Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer worked together in the past

“Gautam has worked before with Shreyas and won the trophy for KKR. Shreyas got Delhi and Punjab to the final. In terms of experience, Shreyas has led in the IPL, won the trophy, and understands Gautam's pattern. In terms of that mutual understanding, Shreyas seems to be the frontrunner,” Mohammad Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

“He is miles ahead of the other contenders. He has even scored runs while being the captain. You will find very few players who are captains and also score. There is no choice better than him," he added.

    Kaif suggests Jasprit Bumrah's name

Kaif has another suggestion for the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) if they want to remove Yadav. According to the former cricketer, Jasprit Bumrah is someone who has long served the team across the formats, has leadership qualities, and deserves to be the skipper of the T20I set-up, subject to his fitness.

“Jasprit Bumrah is deserving if you look at it. He has been in Surya's team, and he has played for a long time and delivered. If he is ready for captaincy, he should be the first above all other names. He captained MI as well, and they won that game," Kaif said.

"He even gave a statement, which shows that he has the desire to captain. I don't know about his fitness and participation, but in that sense, no one should even be close to him, because he has been on the team and done well in different conditions," he added.
