On Monday, the Los Angeles Rams made a blockbuster trade, sending Jared Verse, plus a future first, second, and third-round pick for returning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. As a result of the trade, many NFL analysts have confidently declared that the Rams are now the Super Bowl favorites for the 2026 season.
And while it’s hard not to agree with many of those assessment, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell gave a very sarcastic response to the trade, offering a stark reminder: nobody has won anything yet.

“I mean good for them. I mean, they’ve won it now, right?” Campbell said.
Now before Rams and LA fans go rushing to make this bulletin board material, Campbell did obviously give Garrett some praise.
“I mean, he’s a hell of a player. Verse is a hell of a player, and they’re two totally different players, but that was what they felt like they needed to do and good for them,” Campbell said.
While this may come across as dismissive of the trade, it fits Campbell’s long-time viewpoint that they aren’t concerned about what other teams are doing, they’re focused on themselves.
Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was a little more affirming of the move. He’s seen first-hand the kind of carnage Garrett can deliver, as the two were together in Cleveland from 2020-22 when Petzing served as the tight ends coach and quarterbacks coach.

“I saw it firsthand, he’s a great player,” Petzing said. “Kind of like the guys we talked about on this offense, I don’t know if there’s a weakness in his game. He does so many things at such a high level, plays with such violence, so great player.”
Petzing also made a quip that while the Rams aren’t on the Lions’ schedule this year, he’s hoping Detroit gets a crack at them, alluding to a potential playoff matchup.
“I know right now he’s not on the schedule, so I hope we’re playing him this year,” Petzing said.
Many Lions fans have shown frustration that Detroit seems unwilling to get in an arms race by making an aggressive trade like this one. Campbell was subsequently asked what it would take for Detroit to make an “all-in” move like the Garrett trade.
“Well, I guess I would tell you when that time happens,” Campbell said.
Safe to say, Campbell really didn’t want to talk about this topic.
