A parliamentary proposal in Egypt to export stray dogs abroad and benefit from them economically has sparked controversy.
The head of the Egyptian Veterinaries Syndicate, Magdy Hasan asserted that the idea lacks practical and economic feasibility.
Hasan said that the proposal raises fundamental questions about the export mechanism, specifically whether the dogs would be exported alive or slaughtered for consumption.
He clarified that the Egyptian street dog does not have a large market abroad, whether for breeding or other purposes.
Hasan added that exporting dogs for food is unrealistic, noting that regions known for dog meat consumption already have their own local sources and do not rely on imports.
Such a move would face widespread objections from animal welfare associations and animal rights organizations, in addition to contradicting international trends supporting animal protection, he said.
Even if dogs were exported for breeding and personal use, he noted that the demand for Egyptian street dogs is extremely limited, noting that the number of dogs exported annually does not exceed about 10 – a figure that does not represent a serious solution to the stray dog problem.
Export operations are also subject to strict health and veterinary requirements related to breeding, care, and obtaining approved health certificates, conditions that are difficult to meet for stray dogs, making the implementation of the proposal on the ground extremely difficult.
