Professional golfer Madelene Sagstrom is playing in the U.S. Women’s Open this week. While that’s news on its own, the real scoop is…she’s almost seven months pregnant!
While most mothers-to-be are more than happy to relax on a comfy couch with a big bowl of ice cream on a warm June day, Sagstrom is playing 18 holes against some of the toughest competitors in the world.
The 33-year-old told Golf, “Unless you are pregnant yourself or have kids, you don’t realize how hard it is.” She continued, “And I don’t think I realized it either. I mean, beginning this year, when I found out I was pregnant, I’m like, I’m gonna do this, this, and this. And then it hits you hard.”
Even though it would be easy to take a break and go on an extended maternity leave, the golfer has a more adventurous view of her pro career: “But it’s kind of fun to test the boundaries. Like, what can I do? Can I actually figure this out?”
Sagstrom and her husband, PGA Tour caddy Jack Clarke, announced their baby news in March. The couple married in September of 2024, just days before Sagstrom played for Team Europe in the Solheim Cup. This is the first child for the pair.
How has pregnancy changed the way Madelene Sagstrom plays golf?
The two-time LPGA Tour winner (in 2020 and 2024) recently opened up to the LPGA, sharing, “It’s kind of interesting. Having your body change so much without you having any control over it, it’s sparked a lot of curiosity within me, so I think that has been fun. I've worked super hard with Callaway to change all my clubs, other than my putter.”
Sagstrom added, “I changed all my irons from Jersey, and I’m just hitting them so good. I’m playing well. I can still do this.”
Of course, Sagstrom isn’t taking anything for granted. The pro golfer explained, “I said I wouldn’t do this to myself if I was hurting, or if it was any risk for the baby, or if I was playing too bad. But I’m not, so why not?”
