As Parade reported, "National Donut Day began in 1938 in Chicago as a tribute to The Salvation Army women nicknamed 'Doughnut Lassies.' These women supported American troops on the front lines during World War I by serving up fresh donuts that offered a comforting taste of home."
In honor of the occasion, "The Salvation Army will distribute donuts to veterans in several cities across the U.S. and have other events, including the National Donut Day World Donut Eating Championship, scheduled to be held in Washington, DC," according to USA Today.
