Passengers flying out of a major U.S. airport will now have the option of “remote,” offsite TSA screening as part of an initiative to “enhance the traveler experience,” the Transportation Security Administration announced in a press release.
The pilot program launched June 1 for passengers traveling through Boston Logan International Airport, TSA said. According to officials, the program is a “first-in-the nation remote screening option.”
The pilot, in partnership with the Massachusetts Port Authority, offers a new “remote terminal” in Framingham for certain travelers, TSA said. So far, passengers flying out of Boston Logan on JetBlue or Delta flights between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. are eligible to participate.
A dedicated post on Boston Logan Airport’s website described the program as a “calmer travel experience,” with passengers completing their entire airport security process before arriving at the airport, and bus drop off at the terminal provided.
“Instead of dealing with traffic at the airport, congestion at the checkpoint, and limited parking, these passengers can instead park at Framingham, check in, go through security, and take a bus directly to the secure side of their terminal,” TSA said.
Passengers using the remote screening area will check-in, print boarding passes and check baggage at Framingham. Once the TSA security screening is completed, passengers will board a secure bus that drop them off at their terminal’s secure area with enough time to reach the gate.
Checked bags will transported securely from the remote terminal into Logan’s baggage system and then loaded onto passenger’s flights.
“The Logan Airport Remote Terminal simplifies the airport experience from the start,” the airport said.
Tickets for the screening are required, TSA said, for $9 per passenger. Kids under 18 are free with a ticketed family member. Parking, at Framingham is also available, TSA said, for $7 per day.
According to officials, reservations are recommended.
More potential remote screening pilot programs could rollout nationwide, TSA said, with other remote screening locations already located at Los Angeles, Atlanta and JFK International Airports.
