Tripp Cooler, a North Carolina high school state champion and Junior Nationals qualifier, has announced his verbal commitment to swim for Villanova University beginning in the fall of 2027.

A rising senior at Cannon School in North Carolina, Cooler has been a member of the school’s varsity swimming team for the past three years. He currently trains year-round with SwimMAC Carolina, where he primarily specializes in breast and IM.
Cooler has competed at the NCISAA (North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association) Division 1 State Championship each season starting as a freshman, with his top performances coming at the 2026 iteration of the meet. He took home the state championship title in the 100 breast (56.84) and placed 3rd in the 200 IM (1:53.56), in addition to helping his team to a runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay and a 5th-place finish in the 400 free relay.
At the North Carolina Senior Champs in February, Cooler posted a string of fast swims. He placed 4th in the 200 IM (1:51.68 – PB), 5th in the 100 breast (56.16 – PB), 7th in the 200 breast (2:02.65) and 400 IM (3:59.99 – PB) and 18th in the 100 free (47.32 – PB).
Cooler continued to improve upon his times at the 2026 Cary Sectionals a month later, logging three new lifetime best times. He took 4th in the 200 breast in 2:01.30 after setting a best time of 2:01.13 during prelims, and he placed 5th in the 100 breast (55.71 – PB) and 200 IM (1:51.87) and 30th in the 100 fly (51.61 – PB).
Last summer, Cooler posted a series of top performances at the 2025 Futures Championships (LCM) in Greensboro. He placed 15th in the 200 breast (2:23.20) after turning in a personal best time of 2:21.94 during prelims, in addition to contesting the 100 breast (1:05.78 – PB) and 200 IM (2:10.40 – PB). A week later, he raced at the 2025 Junior National Championships (LCM), where he contested the 50 breast (30.44 – PB) and 100 breast (1:07.30).

Based on the results from the 2026 Big East Conference Championships, Cooler would have landed in the ‘A’ final in the 200 breast and the ‘B’ final in the 100 breast, 400 IM and 200 fly, putting him in a position to be a strong contributor right from the start.
On the team itself, Cooler would have ranked 2nd in the 200 breast, 3rd in the 100 breast and 5th in the 400 IM this past season. With another season to go before he joins the team, it remains to be seen exactly how the roster will shake out.
Cooler is currently Villanova’s only confirmed recruit for fall 2027 on the men’s side, while Mary Drummond, Annika Jorgenson and Emily Connors are set to join the 2027 Villanova recruiting class on the women’s side.
