Lalit Modi breaks silence on India-Pakistan cricket tensions; defends BCCIs position

Former IPL chairman and former BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi has made a strong statement on the relationship between cricket and politics, especially when it comes to India and Pakistan.

The businessman was recently asked whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had also allowed politics to influence cricketing decisions, just as many often accuse the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of doing. The veteran cricket administrator strongly backed BCCI.

Lalit Modi has stressed that the situation between India and Pakistan cannot be viewed in the same way as normal sporting rivalries. He pointed out that the emotions of people today are far stronger than those of the past two or three decades because of the growth of television, digital media, and social media.

The former IPL chairman explained that whenever tensions rise between India and Pakistan, public emotions become much stronger because people are constantly witnessing everything happening around them, so those powerful public sentiments cannot be ignored.

Lalit Modi was quoted as saying by Wisden: “I don't think so. I think in every society, we have to worry about the society we live in. Today, the society we live in and our country that we are in, if we are at war with another country, the sentiments today are amplified far greater than they were 20 years ago or 30 years ago."

"Why? Simply because media is touching every one of us today. What we are seeing live today, our brothers and sisters and people being harmed, is becoming very personal. Those personal sentiments are exploding outwardly.”

Lalit Modi backs BCCI's stand on Pakistan cricket ties

Drawing comparisons with other conflict-hit countries like Israel or Ukraine, Modi suggested that sporting relations are often affected when countries face serious political or military tensions, and the cricket board has to consider the feelings of its own people while making big decisions.

The former IPL chief also hailed BCCI’s approach towards cricketing ties with Pakistan, saying it is their first responsibility to respect the sentiments of the people they represent.

The BCCI has time and again made it clear that they will play Pakistan only in multi-nation events, and that’s only because of the international game’s rules. This became worse after the Pahalgam attack in April 2025, which led to massive conflict between the armed forces from India and Pakistan.

Lalit Modi defends the politicisation of Indian cricket

Modi further explained, "What you see in Israel or what you see in Ukraine, you see in other countries. Will those countries play each other? No. So when India, as you're saying, politicised like Pakistan is, rightly so we are when it comes to Pakistan."

"And I don't deny that. I would do the same thing if I were sitting in the seat there. I would do the same exact thing that the BCCI is doing because my fans and my consumers are the Indian people, first and foremost. I care about my people more."

His remarks have once again brought attention to the bilateral series between the two countries. Over the years, political tensions between the neighbouring nations have repeatedly impacted cricketing ties, and they are now only facing each other in the multi-nation events.
