Sean McVay says he spoke with Aaron Donald about bringing Myles Garrett to Rams

The Los Angeles Rams did not confirm on Tuesday that Aaron Donald is considering a comeback to the NFL.

They also didn’t deny it. And head coach Sean McVay, understandably, sounds excited about the prospect.

McVay joined general manager Les Snead on Tuesday to introduce Garrett as a Ram, a day after the seismic trade that delivered Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. Amid reports that the deal has Donald considering a comeback, McVay was asked about the prospect. Here’s what he had to say:

“Aaron’s a guy that I stay really close in touch with, and I know the respect that he has for Myles, talked to him about the opportunity to be able to bring him on board,” McVay said. “If Aaron decides he wants to dust them off at the age of 35, I bet you he could still do it at a pretty high clip.”

    A pass-rush dream for Rams

Donald is widely viewed as the greatest defender of his generation. An eight-time first-team All-Pro in his 10 NFL seasons, he was named Defensive Player of the Year three times and helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl title.

Garrett is widely viewed as the greatest active defender in the NFL. He’s fresh off of securing the league’s single-season sack record, and his arrival to the Rams has cemented their status as the favorites to win the Super Bowl next season.

It’s a dream pairing that would generate nightmares for opposing quarterbacks and send the Rams into further ecstasy on top of their giddiness over securing Garrett. For now, Garrett alone will do just fine.

“We’re jacked here,” Snead said Tuesday before being asked a question.

Garrett ‘very excited to be here’

Indeed, the Rams are jacked. It was all smiles on the podium as Snead, McVay and Garrett spoke about what the trade means.

“Very excited to be here,” said Garrett, who waived his no-trade clause to green-light the deal. “It’s an honor and a blessing to be in this building.”

Garrett restructured his contract with the Browns in March in a move that signaled that a trade could be possible. He said Tuesday that he first heard about trade talks with Los Angeles last week.

“Found out about a week ago that this was even a possibility, “ Garrett said. It was surprise, it was a bit of excitement. … God willing, it happened.”

As for McVay? Acquiring Garrett is a multi-pronged win.

“He is a pain in the ass to game-plan against, and I’m glad we don’t have to do that anymore,” McVay said.

So would Donald really come back?

Garrett’s offseason arrival alongside that of All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie projects to bolster the Rams’ pass defense as one of the NFL’s most formidable. The goal is clear: the second Super Bowl championship of the Matthew Stafford era.

Adding Donald, even in a diminished capacity at 35 following two seasons away, would further boost those hopes and expectations. That’s a decision that Donald would presumably make with his family.

Donald has yet to chime in. His wife, Erica appeared to do so on social media Tuesday.

Coming out of a comfortable retirement bolstered by the security of $157 million in career earnings to play a game that puts one’s health is risk is not a decision to be taken lightly, especially for for a family man.

But the prospect of teaming up with Garrett to terrorize opposing quarterbacks with a shot at a second ring appears to at least have Donald thinking about it.
