1975 Soft Rock Greatest Hits Album Is Suddenly Making a Chart Comeback 51 Years Later

History appears to be repeating itself for America. The legendary 1970s soft rock trio is back on the music charts for their album History: America’s Greatest Hits— 51 years after it was originally released.

Recorded by America bandmates Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Gerry Beckley, History resurfaced at No. 191 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the week ending June 8, 2026, marking its 66th week total on the chart since 1975. The album peaked at No. 3 on Billboard in December 1975 and has since been certified platinum by the RIAA.

The album includes the classic group’s 11 biggest songs up until 1975, including “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” "Lonely People," and the No. 1 hits “Sister Golden Hair” and “A Horse With No Name,” as well as a new version of the song “Sandman.”

Known for their harmonic vocals and prolific songwriting, America was all over soft rock and pop radio in the 1970s. After releasing five fast studio albums between 1972 and 1975, they had enough material for their Greatest Hits album early on.

The group never officially disbanded, although Peek left in 1977. More than 50 years later, Bunnell remains the only original member of America’s touring lineup, currently on the road for the Happy Trails Tour.

In May 2026, Bunnell told Rolling Stone he never dreamed that the group’s first single, “A Horse With No Name," would become such a massive hit.

“Obviously, the strength of the song was much stronger than I ever expected," he shared. "I thought of it more as a novelty story song that wasn’t full of nice bridges and fancy chord changes. So it was doubly surprising that it did so well. In England especially, a brand-new band, and with the plethora of bands that were coming up then and the great releases going out at the same time….I’m sure Warner Brothers Records were equally surprised.”

Fans can look for another Greatest Hits album in July 2026, with the release of Halcyon Days, which will be released on vinyl, CD, and streaming platforms. The new album is described as “a collection of America’s greatest hits re-recorded in 2011 - including 'A Horse With No Name,' 'Ventura Highway,' 'Sister Golden Hair' and more.”The record will also feature the bonus track, “World Of Light.”
