Trump’s lunatic social media ranting can’t hide his embarrassment

WASHINGTON DC – Shortly after midnight on Saturday, President Donald Trump’s mind was fixated on the greatness of his own mind.

In the midst of a stream of fresh detritus on his social media account, the Commander in Chief pointed to the outcome of his annual physical exam conducted last week at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center just outside Washington.“Unlike other US Presidents, none of whom have ever taken an approved, high difficulty Cognitive Test, I scored a perfect 30 out of 30, considered ‘extreme intelligence’”, Trump claimed. Lest the point had been missed, he observed that “this is my fourth such test, all PERFECT or, 120 correct answers out of 120 questions asked! It is rare that anyone gets a Perfect Score, especially when achieved four times in a row,” he insisted.

But the rest of Trump’s “high-volume posting” on social media over the weekend raised alarming new questions about the mental stability of a man who has his finger on America’s nuclear button, has failed to secure any kind of peace agreement with Iran, and appears now to be in meltdown over the numerous reversals that he is facing.

The collapse of “Freedom 250” – a planned 16-day series of concerts to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday – particularly appears to have stuck in the presidential craw.

At least five top acts have now dropped out of the “Great American State Fair” that is due to take place on the National Mall in Washington in June. Rock star and Poison front man Bret Michaels, country music singer Martina McBride, The Commodores and Grammy-winning hip hop star Young MC are among those binning plans to participate after concluding that the White House intended to politicise the event.

“I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading,” wrote McBride on her Instagram account. “I asked lots of questions and was assured this was a non-partisan event that was meant to celebrate ALL 50 states…what we were told is, in fact, not happening,” she said.

“The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event,” said Young MC, whose real name is Marvin Young. “I hope to perform in DC in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged,” he wrote.

Michaels made similar claims, telling fans that “what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of”.

Trump responded with fury, threatening to politicise the event even further.

“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250 instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet do nothing but complain”, he fulminated. He suggested instead that he himself might headline the event, falsely describing himself as “the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World, the man who gets larger audiences than Elvis in his prime”.

Meanwhile, events concerning the fate of the famous Kennedy Center in Washington also fuelled Trump’s ire. On Friday, federal judge Christopher Cooper struck down the President’s efforts – already fulfilled – to change the performing arts venue’s name to “The Trump Kennedy Center”.  Judge Cooper also ruled that Trump’s plan to shutter the complex for a two-year refurbishment was illegal.

In a series of postings, Trump excoriated the judge and his wife, claimed that “radical left Democrats” had plotted to halt the project in its tracks, but also indicated that he would now wave the white flag of surrender. “We are going to be working with Congress to transfer this failing Institution back to them so they can make a determination as to what to do with it,” he said. In fact, the legal ruling eviscerated the President’s initial claim to enjoy the power to override congressional control of the complex.

Saturday’s social media storm consisted of more than 50 separate postings over a seven-hour period. Trump compared himself to George Washington, published an image depicting his own visage chiselled into Mount Rushmore, made fresh threats to seize Greenland, and promoted an hour-long interview conducted for Fox News by his own daughter-in-law.

But one lesser-noticed series of postings illustrated what Trump means when he claims that “America is Back”.

Three separate images depicted a bucolic summer of family celebrations in the United States: kids playing baseball on a suburban street, families attending a sun-drenched state fair and watching a traditional Independence Day parade in the centre of a small American town.

In a glaring but possibly deliberate omission, not a single person of colour was depicted in any of the three images that Trump posted.

“America is Back,” he claims, just in time for its 250th birthday. But apparently only for some Americans.
