Around the NFL: Dart and Carter Clear the Air, Vrabel Speaks, Roster Cutdown Date Changes, More

The Chicago Bears wrapped up their three-day minicamp on Friday. Next up for the regining NFC North champs is a final round of OTAs June 2-4 and a mandatory minicamp that runs from June 9-11. As for what is happening elsewhere around the NFL, we’ve got more below.

Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart clear the air at Giants camp

If you were thinking that there would be a huge dust-up between New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart and defensive lineman Abdul Carter stemming from the QB’s appearance at a recent presidential rally, think again. The two sides professionally (and publicly) spoke on the matter on Friday:

Abdul Carter says he will only address Jaxson Dart introducing Donald Trump one time:"Some things are bigger than football, and this is one of those things.Jaxson is one of our leaders – he's the face of our franchise. He represents himself and what he does, and he represents… pic.twitter.com/u6ohplXL6l

If you stop and think about it, NFL locker rooms provide unique opportunities for players from different backgrounds and upbringings to discuss their perspectives in a respectful manner among teammates. It sounds like that is what happened here with Dart and Carter. And for what it’s worth, I definitely didn’t have Jameis Winston as being someone who’d have thoughtful insight on the situation. Surprises can be fun.

Mike Vrabel sounds off at Patriots minicamp

Some quotes from New England Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel, who broke his silence and spoke with reporters for the first time since missing Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft for a counseling appointment that came after his reported tryst with former league insider Dianna Russini became public.

On work-life balance: “Really good. I appreciate that my family is great. I love Jen [Vrabel], I love the boys, I love my personal friends.” On if he will miss more time in the future: “I can’t tell you anything other than I’m going to be out there today in full force. So I’m going to focus on today and the excitement that we’ve had and that we’ve built so far.” On where his focus is given the totality of what he is dealing with: “We all have to deal with things outside of here. My focus, and obviously the excitement that I have for coaching, is what is most important right now. This is a great opportunity.”

I understand the skepticism that surrounds Vrabel and his trip to a therapy session. But I truly hope whatever process he is going through is helpful to him and his family. This is a situation I’m sure NFL fans will monitor throughout the season because of its salacious nature. I wonder if anything will come up between now and when the Bears and Pats square off on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.

NFL makes a significant change to its calendar

The NFL has found a new way to take away one of our summer Sundays:

The NFL informed teams recently that this year’s cutdown deadline to 53 players will be 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 30 — not the following Tuesday, as it has been in recent years, sources say.Waiver claims will be due at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 31. I’ll preface this by pointing out that the league’s entire preseason schedule isn’t out. But from what I’ve gathered, the last scheduled date for exhibition action is Saturday, August. 29. So a 5 p.m. CT deadline to cut rosters to 53 players on Sunday, Aug. 30 feels like a quick turnaround — especially since we had grown accustomed to the Tuesday afternoon cutdowns. This feels like a needless change by the league. Maybe there is something I’m missing here.

    Extra points

In case you missed the latest episode of the Bleacher Nation Bears podcast, we’ve got you covered here: Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford shared what’s up (via CBS Sports) with his relationship with Ty Simpson, the quarterback taken by his team with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. He even shared an anecdote about what he told the rookie after he was drafted:

“Listen, I was a big fan of Ty when he was playing at Alabama. I sent him a text after he got drafted and said, ‘Really enjoyed watching you play, you were just in the wrong jersey. You weren’t a Dawg.’ I did enjoy watching him play. He’s a talented kid.”

I love playful ribbing between teammates who went to rival colleges. Some current (and former) Chicago Bears are spotted in this clip featuring every pick-six from the 2025 NFL season:

    — NFL (@NFL) May 28, 2026 Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is on Pro Football Focus’ list of regression candidates who are likely to thorw more interceptions in 2026 than they did in 2025:

Love’s 41.7% turnover-worthy-throw-to-interception conversion rate sat below the league average (49.1%), meaning his genuinely risky throws became interceptions at a lower-than-normal rate.

The larger source of positive variance came elsewhere. Across 485 pass attempts, Love threw just one interception on a non-turnover-worthy play despite league-average rates projecting closer to four. That difference of roughly three interceptions accounts for the majority of his +3.6 net-luck figure.

Non-turnover-worthy interceptions are among the least stable outcomes in the model. They are often driven by tipped passes, receiver errors and other forms of variance largely disconnected from quarterback decision-making.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams also appears on the list, but PFF notes the regression already happened. So why does he make the list this year? “The reason Williams still appears on the 2025 list is that a smaller version of the same dynamic remains in place. Unlike last offseason, there is no massive gap left to close. His 45.0% turnover-worthy-throw-to-interception conversion rate now sits close to the league average, meaning most of the remaining positive variance comes from elsewhere.” Other notable names on the list (because they’re on the Bears’ 2026 schedule) include Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Michael Penix Jr. (Atlanta Falcons). This FOX Sports list of the 10 best revenge games for the upcoming NFL season is a fun one. No one does orchestrated drama like this league!
