Joe Rogan says Van Halen in its classic lineup was “literally a perfect band,” while arguing that Eddie Van Halen never received the full credit he deserved for changing guitar music forever.
During a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan spoke with investor and mathematician Eric Weinstein about legendary rock acts and the lasting impact of guitarist Eddie Van Halen. The podcast host did not hold back when discussing the influence of the iconic California rock band.
Rogan reflected on the group’s evolution after lead singer David Lee Roth left in 1985 and was replaced by Sammy Hagar. While he acknowledged the band's continued success, he said the music changed significantly from what many early fans had come to love.

"It's just, Van Halen became Van Hagar and it became a different kind of music. And I think a lot of the original hardcore fans left. I think it got more popular with Sammy Hagar but it was a different kind of music, not that it's bad, but it's different," Rogan reasoned.
The podcast host then shared his strongest praise for the band's original lineup.
"I think Van Halen with David Lee Roth in his prime was literally a perfect band. It was phenomenal. They were the shit when I was in high school. Everybody had Van Halen on their notebooks, they had the VH."
Beyond praising the band as a whole, Rogan focused heavily on Eddie Van Halen's role in shaping modern guitar playing.
According to Rogan, Eddie's contributions to music have not always received the level of mainstream recognition they deserve. Widely regarded as one of rock's most innovative guitarists, Eddie became famous for techniques such as finger tapping and for creating a distinctive sound that influenced generations of musicians.
Van Halen was formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972 by brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen. The group's most famous lineup featured David Lee Roth on vocals, Michael Anthony on bass, Alex Van Halen on drums and Eddie Van Halen on guitar.
The band broke into the mainstream with its self-titled debut album in 1978. Over the next several years, Van Halen released a string of successful albums, including Van Halen II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down and the blockbuster 1984.
The album 1984 produced some of the band's biggest hits, including "Jump," which became Van Halen's only No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
By the time David Lee Roth departed in 1985, Van Halen had become one of the biggest rock bands in the world.
Although Rogan expressed a preference for the Roth-fronted version of the band, Van Halen continued to achieve major commercial success after Sammy Hagar joined.
During the Hagar era, the group released four consecutive No. 1 albums in the United States: 5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance. The band later worked with vocalist Gary Cherone before eventually reuniting with Roth in the 2000s.
Van Halen's final studio album, A Different Kind of Truth, arrived in 2012 and marked the return of Roth as lead singer. The record also featured Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's son, on bass.
Following Eddie Van Halen's death from cancer in October 2020, Wolfgang confirmed that the band had effectively come to an end.
Despite the group's inactivity, Van Halen remains one of the best-selling rock bands in history, with more than 80 million records sold worldwide. The band's influence continues to be felt across rock and hard rock music decades after its formation.
