Chicago Cubs Lineup- Amaya Behind the Plate

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs finally ended their losing streak last night, which reached 10 games, in dramatic fashion against the Pirates. The offense finally broke out of their prolonged slump, largely due to Ian Happ’s 5 RBI. They’ll look to build on that tonight against one of the best pitchers in baseball, with one more game in Pittsburgh before heading to St. Louis.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 4 against the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Moisés Ballesteros, DH Miguel Amaya, C Dansby Swanson, SS

Craig Counsell is deploying the same lineup as last night, except Miguel Amaya is catching instead of Carson Kelly. We know that Counsell doesn’t like to change the lineup often, which became a major topic over the last two weeks, but it feels like the right move to stick with what worked after a successful game yesterday.

Nico Hoerner and Michael Busch have both done well against Paul Skenes in the past, with OPS marks of 1.012 and 1.087, respectively. Add in Pete Crow-Armstrong’s recent success, and the Cubs could pounce on Skenes early.

A struggling Cubs lineup going up against Paul Skenes feels like a death sentence, but yesterday’s 10-run outburst is a really positive sign. This team needs to get back on track quickly, with the offense looking to avoid its sixth straight series loss.

    More on both pitchers below.

    Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup:

    TBA

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP

It’s been a bumpy road lately for Rea, who has a 5.06 ERA in May. Earlier this month, he allowed nine runs across nine innings in just two starts. However, he followed that up with seven innings of three-run ball against the Astros in his last outing.

Last season against the Pirates, Rea allowed just five runs across 17 innings of work. He’s really struggled on the road so far this year, posting a 6.75 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 26.2 innings.

Rea hasn’t been as effective as he was last season, but he’s been serviceable, especially in a rotation that needs as many innings as possible from him. The Cubs will need him to be lights out tonight to give them a chance against Paul Skenes.

    Pittsburgh Pirates: Paul Skenes, RHP

As is typical in a four-game series against the Pirates, the Cubs have to deal with Paul Skenes. It’s been a down year for the reigning Cy Young Award winner, who has a 3.00 ERA in 60.0 innings. The fact that those stats are considered worse than normal for Skenes is crazy, but that’s how good he is.

Skenes allowed five runs in 0.2 innings against the Mets on Opening Day, which really hurt his ERA, but he’s turned things around since that outing in Queens. He had a 1.62 ERA and 0.66 WHIP in April, but things haven’t gone as well as he’d hoped lately. Skenes has had back-to-back rough outings against both the Phillies and Blue Jays, as Brett wrote about earlier today, which could be ideal for the Cubs.

Against the Cubs in his career, Skenes has a 2.94 ERA in 33.2 innings. The Cubs will look to put up a crooked number and continue what has been an uncharacteristic stretch for the 24-year-old.
