Swamp Rock Legend Behind Some of Classic Rocks Biggest Songs Turns 81

He's one of the most celebrated artists in all of rock and roll, and now he's celebrating his 81st birthday.

John Fogerty, the iconic songwriter and frontman for Creedance Clearwater Revival, officially turrned 81 on Thursday, May 28, marking another year in a career that helped shape classic American rock music as we know it.

Fogerty is responsible for some of the biggest hits of the late '60s and early '70s. With one of the most distinctive voices in rock music and songwriting that has stood the test of time, CCR songs like "Fortunate Son," "Proud Mary," and "Bad Moon Rising," helped shaped the sound of a generation.

But the legendary swamp-rock sound that CCR became known for has endured for over half a century now, with some of Fogerty's hits, like "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," recently climbing the charts again after 56 years.

Just last year, "Fortunate Son" was named the most-streamed song from the '60s in 2025, proving that Fogerty's songwriting continues to resonate with listeners across generations.

And while he might be one year older, Fogerty is living proof that age is just a number. He is not only in the middle of a Legacy Tour with his Travelin' Band (featuring members of his own family), but even all these years later, fans say Fogerty still sounds exactly the same when singing some of his most beloved hits.

Surprisingly, though, Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival never had a No. 1 hit, with several of their biggest songs instead peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100: "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Lookin' Out My Back Door/Long As I Can See the Light," "Green River" and "Travelin' Band/Who'll Stop the Rain."

With CCR, Fogerty released three Top 10 albums in 1969 alone, and the group had 14 consecutive Top 10 singles. Some of their fan-favorite tracks include "Down on the Corner," "Born on the Bayou" "Up Around the Bend" and many, many more.

In 1993, Fogerty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his music catalog — which he triumphantly regained ownership of in 2023 — remains one of the most recognizable in classic rock history.
