Matthew Perry’s Assistant Sentenced to 41 Months in Prison After Overdose

Matthew Perry’s live-in personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, has learned his punishment for his role in the actor’s death.

According to the Associated Press, a judge sentenced Iwamasa to 41 months in prison on Wednesday, May 27.

He was also ordered to complete two years of probation and pay a $10,000 fine. Iwamasa must surrender to authorities by July 17 to begin his sentence behind bars.

“You were privy to his struggle with addiction,” the judge said before handing down the sentence. “Your conduct was reckless, not just on the day of his death but in the days leading up to his death.”

The Most Shocking Celebrity Deaths of All Time

Iwamasa previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine, causing death. He was one of five defendants charged in connection with the Friends actor’s death and the last to learn of his sentence.

Before a judge delivered a ruling, Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, wrote a victim impact statement and claimed Iwamasa enabled the addiction that led to her son’s death in 2023.

“His number one responsibility was to ensure that Matthew remained what he wanted to be: drug‑free,” Suzanne wrote via NBC News. “But instead of protecting Matthew, he aided and abetted illegal drug use, arranged for one source of supply and then another.”

Perry‘s sisters, Caitlin and Madeline Morrison, also criticized Iwamasa for his role in the actor’s death when they wrote statements for the court.

“It is difficult to put into words the sense of betrayal I felt when I found out what Kenny had done,” Madeline wrote via People. “In many ways, it felt like my brother died all over again.”

Caitlin added, “I will never know if the lethal dose of ketamine was only lethal by accident. But I know that when Kenny left the house, he was doing one of two things. He was either escaping from something he knew he had done or he was willfully abandoning a vulnerable person in a dangerous situation.”

Matthew Perry's Death Investigation: A Complete Timeline

Iwamasa was the last person to see Perry alive, and he was the one who found him dead in his jacuzzi after running errands.

Iwamasa previously admitted to repeatedly injecting Perry with ketamine without medical training, including administering multiple injections on October 28, 2023. Perry died at his Los Angeles home at the age of 54 that same day.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, Perry died from “the acute effects of ketamine.” A toxicology report released in December 2023 also listed drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (which is used to treat opioid use) as contributing factors. The actor’s death was ruled an accident.
