Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy had some odd things to say about his relationship with teammate Kyler Murray.
Because even though McCarthy says there is no awkwardness in the quarterbacks’ room, the 2024 first-round pick dropped one of the most awkward quotes I’ve seen from a quarterback:
Kyler Murray describing his relationship with J.J.: "It's been great. Obviously, he's a younger guy, so any way I can help him, I feel like I played seven years going on eight. I'm considered a veteran even though I don't see myself as that. Giving him any knowledge he needs."

Asked in a follow-up question if there is any awkwardness with Murray, McCarthy said: “Awkwardness? It’s just like the same feeling when you’re in high school and there’s another person on the other side of the room. That’s just kind of how it is. I wouldn’t say there’s any awkwardness.”
For his part, Murray said his time with McCarthy since arriving in Minnesota has been “great.” He said McCarthy is “always communicating” and asking questions.
We’re not even in June, and the Vikings quarterback competition is already at a level of weird that I wasn’t prepared for, which makes this fun for those of us who enjoy schadenfreude.

Perhaps there is something that could present the words from McCarthy in a better light. Maybe hearing his tone would help make sense of the situation. Or possibly seeing his body language could make sense of it all. But at face value, these are frigid words from someone who sounds threatened by the presence of Kyler Murray as the two battle for the Vikings QB1 gig.
What an odd situation this could turn out to be. And, as someone who will be watching from afar, I am rooting for it to get weirder and more awkward in the days, weeks, and months between now and when the season kicks off in September.
As a Bears fan, I’ve seen more than my fair share of quarterback competitions. And yet, I can’t say I’ve ever seen one begin with a war of words with such a dichotomy. I’ve read (and re-read) the quote from McCarthy more times than I’d care to admit because I’m trying to figure out what he is getting at with his words. Instead, I find myself puzzled … and mildly entertained.
