Point Loma High’s boys volleyball team has arrived in Fresno after a 346-mile bus ride for the state CIF championship match after winning the Southern Section title over the past week.The road trip comes after the team hoisted the school’s first CIF section volleyball trophy, defeating Hoover High 3-1 in sets. The Pointers then logged state tournament wins over Maywood CES (3-0), Temescal Canyon (3-1) and Christian (3-1) to set up the state Div. IV finals on May 30. For that match, the number 2-seeded Pointers will attempt to put the bite on the number 1-ranked El Dorado Cougars of Placerville.The teams will compete at Fresno City College, with the first serve at 11 a.m. The El Dorado Cougars come in with a 28-9 overall record, winning 86 of 126 sets over the season. Meanwhile, the Pointers are 23-12, and have won 72 of 114 sets this season.The Pointers are ranked 26th of 111 teams in San Diego and Imperial Counties, while theCougars are 15th of 155 teams in San Joaquin County. The Pointers are coached by Ethanand Justin Phung.Now, onto softball, where the Point Loma Pointers softball team is on quite a streak. The team defeated Bonita Vista 8-3 on May 26, their 10th straight win, giving them the best record in their bracket and punching their ticket to the Open Division finals scheduled for May 30.The number 2-seeded Pointers will meet the number 1-seed Mater Dei Catholic at UCSD at 7 p.m. The teams met earlier this season, with the Crusaders edging the Pointers 2-1. To reach the finals, the Pointers defeated No. 7 Imperial High 9-2, No. 6 La Costa Canyon(3-2), and No. 3 Bonita Vista (8-3). Mater Dei beat No. 8, Del Norte twice (6-0 and 7-2), andNo. 4 Rancho Bernardo (3-0).The Pointers are led by Avery MacPherson with a .404 batting average, followed by Remington Spangler (.384), Madison Dudley (.370), and Kendall Vickers (.367).Ella Poulin has belted 12 home runs with Spangler (8), MacPherson (7) and Siena Balistreri(6) leading a team’s total home run count of 39. Poulin is 12-3 with a 2.28 ERA, while Ryoko Schroth has a strong record of 7-2, with a 3.06 ERA. Remington Spangler rounds out the rotation with a 4-2, 0.75 ERA. The team’s ace, Poulin, has struck out 118 batters in 95.1 innings, while Spangler has fanned 83 in just 56.1 innings.Tickets for the game can be purchased at gofan.go and are priced at $18.85 for adults and $11.50 for seniors and students.Turning to baseball, Pointer baseball players may have nightmares of Eastlake after the Titans spoiled their run to an Open Division championship.After losses to the Titans 7-6 and 16-0 in preseason play, the number 3-seeded Titans edged the number 6-seeded Pointers 3-1 to begin the double-elimination CIF playoffs at Eastlakecampus.But the Pointers roared back with impressive wins over defending champion Granite Hills(10-1) and San Marcos (12-5). These wins set up a second meeting with the Titans, who hadalso beaten San Marcos (5-3) to remain undefeated in the bracket.Playing May 26 for the third time this season at the South Bay field, the Titans posted a 6-4win. The Pointers took an early 1-0 lead and also led 4-2 after four innings, but the Titanscame back with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to seal the win and eliminatethe Pointers.Wyatt Olson had a single and a double and drove in a run, while other RBIs went to ElijahMorais, Jaxon Seiler and Quinten Jones. The Pointers left seven players on base.Pointer pitchers issued six walks and hit three batters, putting nine Titans on base whilestriking out two Titans.The Pointers end their season with a record of 19-11-1. The team won CIF championshipsin 2024 (Div. II) and 2025 (Div. I) and advanced to the Open Division this season, anamazing accomplishment in itself.A talented contingent of 17 players returns next year as the Pointer program continues on anupward trend.
