Played pretty well: Pat Cummins left impressed by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s explosive knock in Eliminator vs SRH

In the match.72 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, which was the Eliminator between the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh. It was one-way traffic for the Royals as they defeated Pat Cummins' Army by 47 runs to qualify for Qualifier 2.

Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to field first, as they made one change, bringing in Praful Hinge in place of Harshal Patel. Rajasthan Royals also made a change as Ravindra Jadeja came in place of Shubam Dubey in the team. This was the knockout game as the loser has been out, and the winner, RR, will be playing against the Gujarat Titans (GT).

After being asked to bat first, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi went berserk as he smacked the Orange Army bowlers all over the park. He and his opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, stitched 80/0 in the power play. The former was the aggressor between the two, as he scored his fifty in 16 balls and went on to break several records in his innings of 97 runs off 29 deliveries.

The two stitched 125 runs partnership before Vaibhav was out, Jaiswal also departed soon on 29 runs, and then Dhruv Jurel went back after scoring his half-century. Riyan Parag was back playing a small knock of 26 off 11 balls. After the quick wickets, the Royals fell short of 20 runs; in the last five overs, they scored 36/5. As RR finished off with the score of 243/8.

SRH batters were never in the chase

While chasing, SRH had the worst possible start, as Abhishek Sharma went back for a duck in the first over. After that, Ishan Kishan struck at a high pace but could not convert his start into a big score and was back on 33 off 11 balls. Travis Head followed with 17 runs. Inside 10 overs, half the team was back in the dugout.

Then Nitish Kumar Reddy and Salil Arora stitched a partnership of 56(24), but it was broken as the latter was out 38 off 20 deliveries. Pat Cummins soon followed for one run. They were bowled out for the score of 196 runs as Shivang Kumar was the final man to be dismissed on 27 runs.

It was always going to be tough- Pat Cummins

Pat Cummins after the loss said, "Yeah, he (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi) played pretty well. Yeah, just don't feel like you have too many options. Obviously, it's a really good pitch, but the margins are so small. If you miss your yorker by a little bit, he doesn't tend to miss them. So yeah, fair play. (Are there any regrets from choosing to chase?) Not really.

"Yeah, it's a pretty good wicket even there at the end. (On unearthing young players) Yeah, I think we end up as a really well-rounded team. Praful and Sakib were awesome. Young guys haven't played a lot. I think I saw a stat today, we're one of the youngest teams to make the playoffs or something this year, or ever, or something like that."

Pat Cummins further added, "Yeah, I think a few things still need to go right to chase down 240, but if there was ever going to be a pitch and a field to do it, it was this one. I think we stayed on the rate for most of the innings. We just kind of lost probably a couple too many wickets at the wrong time. So it was always going to be tough, but gave ourselves a decent chance. (Two playoffs in three years) Yeah, that's right."

"You know, I think we're one tiny little bit away from being in the top two as well. So you can't ask for much more. The boys have been fantastic, their attitude all year, the way they've gone about it. It looks like they've really enjoyed their cricket, so I can't ask for any more." Pat Cummins concluded.
