A couple top Chicago Cubs prospects to mention today. It’s possible some will see them as the top positional prospect in the system and the top pitching prospect in the system, so maybe it makes sense to pair them together for some notes.
The stories are a little divergent, at least today.
Let’s start with Wiggins, since we hear so little about him these days, after he was shut down in early April with an elbow issue that was totally nothing and it’s just about being strategic and OK maybe it’s something and OK yeah it’s gonna have him out for a while and OK yeah we’re just gonna not really talk about him for weeks and weeks at a time.
The good news is that Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpens out in Arizona, with another one coming in the next day or two, per Jed Hoyer (Tribune). The less good news is that there isn’t really anything more to say than that. “He’s working his way back, he’s doing a lot of work, he’s throwing bullpens, and obviously that’s a good sign,” Hoyer said of Wiggins. “But he hasn’t really ramped up to the game situations.”
In other words, it’ll still be a good long while before Wiggins is back to Triple-A Iowa making starts. Take your favorite guess on the timeline, because it could be anything. At least he’s not shut down, but I would say hopes that he could come up as an impact arm for the big league team this season have diminished considerably. At this point, I’m just hoping he can get in a good partial season of development work.
Let’s turn to Josiah Hartshorn, the Cubs outfield prospect who had a nice debut at High-A South Bend yesterday, and is already getting after it again today:

Hartshorn, 19, was a high school draftee last year and is making his pro debut this season. The fact that he’s already reached High-A is a tremendous compliment and vote of confidence. Forget how he does at South Bend. It’s wild that he reached that level at all, much less before June. I won’t let myself get too out over my skis about a hot start at High-A, but man, what if he just keeps raking? What if the Cubs have no choice but to promote him to Double-A later this year? In his pro debut? Out of high school?!
OK, OK. I just did it. I let myself get out over my skis. I’m back to just watching and enjoying and hoping all the Cubs’ top prospects can stay/get healthy.
