The Witcher 3 DLC announced as CDPR confirms first expansion in 10 years

The long-rumoured third major expansion for The Witcher 3 has officially been confirmed by developer CD Projekt Red.

Following its initial release in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has gone on to become one of the defining RPGs of the 2010s, earning itself two critically acclaimed expansions in Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

But with a decade having passed since the release of Blood and Wine, and The Witcher 4 still apparently nowhere near release, CDPR has apparently seen fit to throw hungry players a bone to tide them over until an eventual sequel.

In a statement put out on The Witcher's official social media channels, the studio wrote: "Medallion's humming… that can only mean one thing! It's time to announce The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past!

"This brand new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will take you to the Path with Geralt of Rivia once more."

The DLC is being co-developed alongside fellow Polish studio Fool's Theory, who are also working with CDPR on the previously announced remake of the original Witcher game.

As well as developing two of their own titles in The Thaumaturge and Seven, Fool's Theory has supported development on some of the most successful games of the last decade, including Baldur's Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2 and 2024's Silent Hill 2 remake.

Songs of the Past will be coming to The Witcher 3 in 2027, and will be available for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5.

Interestingly, despite The Witcher 3 being available on Nintendo Switch, and having now been succeeded by the more powerful Switch 2, there is no mention of Songs of the Past coming to either console, which will no doubt be a blow to Nintendo fans.

But regardless, with both The Witcher 4 and the next Cyberpunk title still potentially years away, CDPR will be hoping that a new DLC and a remake will be enough to sate its most fervent fans.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past will release in 2027.
