At 81, Sam Elliott Admits a Heartbreaking TV Scene Mirrors His Real-Life Frailty: The Truth of It Is...

Sam Elliott has been part of many iconic Western films in his 60-year career. At 81 years old, he is opening up about aging in Hollywood.

“I’ve had a hard life. I’ve been an athlete all my life, and I’ve been a laborer all my life, and I’m paying for it now,” Elliott told Varietyin an interview.

The Academy Award nominee, known for his walrus mustache and rugged charm, has appeared in legendary films such as Tombstone, Mask, and The Big Lebowski.

Elliott currently portrays T.L. Norris on the Paramount drama Landman. He finds many of his characters' struggles are similar to his own.

T.L. is an oil field worker who is struggling with his age and physical decline. After his wife dies, he enters a deep despair. His son, Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton), decides to have his father come live with him.

In a gut-wrenching scene, T.L. falls in a swimming pool and can’t pick himself up. He is stuck for hours until his son finds him.

“The truth of it is [that scene] is very true to where I am at this point in my life physically. Not mentally, but physically,” the actor shared.

Throughout his six-decade-long career, Elliot has seen both highs and lows as a performer.

Even as a veteran actor, he looks up to his Landman co-stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, JonHamm, and Andy Garcia.

“I know back when I was starting out, when I was doing whatever I could do as a contract player at Fox, the early days, and I look back on some of that work now, I think ‘If only I’d have done this or that,’” he said. “I’m pretty amazed at the talent out there in the world today. It’s incredible.”

Elliot is no stranger to appearing in a popular project, and Landman is no exception.

The second season’s first episode saw 9.2 million views in two days. The series has been on the Nielsen streaming top 10 chart for 10 consecutive weeks.

“It’s dumbfounding that there’s so many people that are watching this show,” Elliott says. “I think that it’s a great escape from the shit that’s out there in the world today.”
