This month on “The Changemakers” join for a discussion with John Armin, founder of Utilyst, about how Utilyst is using AI to help utilities and infrastructure systems predict problems before they happen. By attempting to predict potential needs and issues, Utilyst is working to make water, energy and similar critical services smarter, safer, and more efficient.

“I have a computer science Master degree and a PhD in environmental engineering …. I’m also an adjunct professor at UNC Chapel Hill’s public health school, I used to be a postdoc there, [I’ve been] living in this region for six years now,” said Armin. “Before starting the company, I was working in a consultant firm dealing with the same challenges that, right now, I’m trying to solve.”
According to Armin, many utilities and critical infrastructure services are hesitant to use cloud solutions and similar always-online services due to an “air gap” environment designed around strict cybersecurity protocol. With Utilyst, the goal is to find new ways to better serve infrastructure workers, without creating new vulnerabilities.
“So, most utilities, they’re very concerned about cybersecurity,” said Armin. “… So, we decided ‘let’s just build a solution that could be used on the utility side,’ in their secure environment and support them on their day-to-day operations, bring some of these AI intelligence … that they don’t necessarily give access to the internet.”
Using these tools, Utilyst is working to create a new iteration of LLM technology specifically curated to assist in predicting potential failures, preempting troubleshooting, and acting as an on-demand assist for utility workers who could benefit from an additional resource.
“We are not replacing any utility operators,” said Armin. “We are just bringing additional support for those busy utility operators so they can be more efficient on their day-to-day activities … supporting them 24/7 on, like, monitoring the data, understanding, reasoning, et cetera.”
