Millionaire for Life is a nightly nationwide drawing that offers players the long odds of 1 in more than 22.9 million of winning $1 million a year for life. But in just three months, the game’s top prize has been won twice.

The latest winner comes by way of New York. State lottery officials there say a $5 Millionaire for Life play was sold at the Price Chopper supermarket in Richfield Springs, located at 1 Main Street.

The winning ticket matched all six numbers during the game’s drawing on Thursday, May 21. The winning numbers were 3, 15, 16, 24, 28, and the Millionaire Ball was 4.

    Two Millionaires for Life

The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) is the nonprofit organization that operates Powerball on behalf of its 48 participating member jurisdictions.

MUSL debuted Millionaire for Life on Sunday, Feb. 22, with the game giving lottery players a way to win each day. While Powerball is drawn three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 pm ET, Millionaire for Life is drawn nightly. Millionaire is also drawn later at 11:15 pm ET, providing players a bit more time to make their play.

Last Friday’s Millionaire for Life jackpot is the second after a player in Ohio won the top prize during the drawing on April 27. That play was sold at the Giant Eagle supermarket in Cleveland at 15325 Edgecliff Avenue. The ticket has yet to be redeemed.

Both winners must decide whether to take the annual $1 million prize or a one-time cash option of $18 million. Along with an effective federal tax of 37%, the Ohio win will be subjected to a 2.75% state tax. The New York windfall will face a 10.9% state levy, the highest state lottery tax in the nation.

Ohio Lottery rules give winners 180 days from the drawing date to redeem. The Millionaire for Life winner in New York has 365 days from the drawing date.

    Millionaire for Life Estate Guarantee

To ensure that a winner of the Millionaire for Life games who suddenly passes can still bequeath financial means to their beneficiaries, MUSL included a stipulation that those who choose the annuity receive $1 million for at least 20 years.

So, if a winner dies after just two years, their estate would continue to receive $1 million for the next 18 years. Known as the 20-year guarantee, the terms also apply to Millionaire for Life’s second-tier prize of $100,000 a year for life.

The $100K a year for life prize was also won during the May 21 drawing. A ticket sold in Michigan overcame the odds of 1 in more than 5.72 million to decide between $100K a year for life or a one-time cash prize of $2.2 million.
