LA 2028 Water Polo Qualification Standards Released: Women Will Now Have Equal Team Numbers To Men

By Will Baxley on SwimSwam

The International Olympic Committee and World Aquatics have finalized the selection principles for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. For the first time, women will have an equal number of countries competing in their tournament to men.

There are twelve spots up for grabs in the 2028 women’s tournament, up from ten spots in the Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Prior to that, the women’s tournament allowed for eight teams to compete from the inaugural Olympic women’s tournament in 2000 to 2016.

Men, by contrast, have had twelve countries in their Olympic tournament starting in 1984.

As the host nation, the United States automatically qualifies for both the men’s and women’s tournament. The rest of the selection will be determined as follows for both men and women:

The top finishing National Olympic Committee (NOC) in the 2027 Water Polo World Cup Final The top two NOCs at the 2027 World Championships The highest-placing NOCs at each of the five continental championships The top three finishers at the 2028

Note that in previous cycles, North and South America were grouped under one continent, and their spot was decided at the Pan American Games in the previous year. It appears that this cycle will likely be the same in that regard.

If a team qualifies on multiple criteria, their spot on the second criteria will go to the next-highest person. For example, if the United States were to win the Pan American Championships with Mexico getting second, Mexico would get the spot as the U.S. was already in by being the host country.

These qualifications differ from the qualification criteria for the Paris 2024 tournament. For one, the World Cup was not used as a qualification tournament in 2024. Additionally, there will be no 2028 World Championships like there was in 2024 (due to the chain effect of COVID-19 delaying the 2020 Olympics one year), so World Championships spots come from the year prior this time around.

The tournament is set to take place at the Long Beach Aquatics Center during the earlier part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Spain will look to defend its women’s gold medal, while the Serbian men could make it a 4th consecutive men’s tournament gold for their country.
