With the start of the Point Loma Summer Concerts series just weeks away, organizers are seeking donations to help offset the rising costs of delivering five weekly concerts from July 10 to August 7.The free concerts are held every Friday evening at Point Loma Park, 1049 Catalina Blvd., with a performance on the junior stage at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Main Stage band kicking off at 6:30 p.m. “For 26 years, the Point Loma Summer Concerts has brought our community together for free summer concerts in the park,” said Glenn Millar, president of the nonprofit concert series for 2026. “But keeping the concerts free is not free.”Noting the Concerts need your help,” Millar added, “In past years, our sponsors have covered much of the cost. This year, sponsorships have come in lighter than usual, and we are now only eight weeks away from the first concert. So, we are turning to the people who love these concerts most: you, our loyal fans. Our goal is to raise $60,000 from the community to help make sure all five concerts happen this summer.”

The 2026 PLSC concert lineup:

July 10: TLR – The Long Run, Experience the Eagles July 17: Surf City AllStars – Beach Boys Tribute Band July 24: The Bill Wells Band – Rock, Pop, R&B & Blues Cover Band July 31: Liquid Blue – Pop & Rock Cover Band Aug. 7: Swift Nation With The Sabrina Show – Taylor Swift & Sabrina Carpenter Tribute Band

Millar noted that four of the five 2026 summer concerts are safe financially. It’s just the fifth and final concert that needs a financial boost to ensure that the show goes on again this year. “Most community events ask for help from the community,” he said. “We never have. Now we are.”This year, even with an all-volunteer board and staff, Millar noted Point Loma Summer Concerts’ cost to produce its five-concert season is “about 25% more than last year thanks to inflation.” Just a few things Point Loma Summer Concerts pays for to support a well-produced, fun, and safe environment for these shows include police, ambulance service, permits, private security, the stage, sound equipment, insurance and restrooms.Noting both grant- and sponsorship-giving is down this year as well due to economic uncertainty, Millar pointed out that Point Loma Summer Concerts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every year gives $10,000 to $20,000 back to local youth music programs from money raised during the concert raffles. He added many of Point Loma Summer Concerts’ 100% volunteer staff and board work on the concerts year-round, with some members working 10-20 hours a week. Miller added that budgeted money, about $40,000 per concert, goes to permits, bands, staging, sound systems, porta-potty rentals, other equipment rentals, police, private security, medical, insurance, etc.Point Loma Summer Concerts is also making it easy for those wishing to help out this year’s concert series with donations. “Because we would never ask for your support without giving something back, we created Friends of the Point Loma Summer Concerts,” said Millar. “As a Friend, you can support the concerts at a level that feels right for you and receive fun swag, recognition, and special benefits depending on your giving level. Ask yourself: when you bring your family and friends to the concerts, what would that experience be worth if you had to buy tickets?”Those wishing to donate can do so at the Point Loma Summer Concert website. Go under the Donate to Point Loma Summer Concerts tab and choose your support level. “You’ll have done something genuinely meaningful for our community,” said Millar.Bridget Cantu Wear, wife of former City Council member Byron Wear of Point Loma, founded the concert series more than 25 years ago. “I was on the board of the Point Loma Little League and knew their field would be a perfect location for our concert series,” she said. “So I went out and raised money, asked lots of friends to serve on the committee, and then planned our first concert – The Navy Southwest Band.”Cantu Wear noted almost 300 people turned out for the inaugural concert, adding several community leaders who then took on the responsibility for creating the concert series and the nonprofit to support it. “Volunteers and sponsors are the backbone of any successful effort,” Cantu Wear said. “Congratulations to all who have made this a gift to our community.”
