The Career of Dexys Midnight Runners
Dexys Midnight Runners was formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England, by Kevin Rowland and Kevin "Al" Archer—two musicians spinning off from the sort-lived punk group the Killjoys. In 1980, the band released their debut album, Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, a record that went on to receive significant critical acclaim and peak at No. 6 on the official U.K. Albums Chart.
Throughout their career, the band has achieved significant commercial milestones and major chart dominance. In 1982, the group delivered their signature global hit, "Come On Eileen," a song that captured the No. 1 spot on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the official U.S. Singles Chart. This rare cross-Atlantic feat was accompanied by a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for surpassing 500,000 units sold in the U.S. alone, with the single eventually moving over 5 million copies worldwide.
