The Late Show Starring Stephen Colbert has officially come to an end, concluding one of the most popular late night talk shows in mainstream television right now.
While most paid their respects to the long-running stand-up comic and beloved talk show host, Colbert's foremost rival Donald Trump has taken to social media to celebrate his exit from CBS.
According to Variety, the U.S. president gloated over The Late Show's finale on his Truth Social account, posting a brutal critique of the late night host a few short hours after Colbert went off the air.
“Colbert is finally finished at CBS," the president wrote. "Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness he’s finally gone!”
Of course, this hardly the first time Trump and Colbert have traded barbed comments at one another's expense. Upon learning that The Late Show was being taken off of CBS, Trump said that he "absolutely loved that Colbert got fired," prompting the comic to respond by telling the president, "Go f*ck yourself" on his show.
Colbert's final show took place on May 21, with a number of prominent stars and musical guests in attendance. Perhaps most memorably, iconic musician Paul McCartney took to the stage for a lively performance, ushering an end to The Late Show after 11 seasons on the network.
With Colbert's exit, Trump has managed to outlast one of his most vocal critics in mainstream media. Last Friday, the president went on to express his hopes that the various other late night hosts' programs are similarly canceled
“Stephen Colbert’s firing from CBS was the ‘Beginning of the End’ for untalented, nasty, highly overpaid, not funny, and very poorly rated Late Night Television Hosts," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Others, of even less talent, to soon follow. May they all Rest in Peace!"
