Marshals season 2: Release date speculation and cast

While Yellowstone is no more, the wider universe lives on through its prequels, sequels and spin-offs – including the Kayce Dutton-focused Marshals.

In the series, the Special Deputy US Marshal must raise his son alone following the shocking death of his wife Monica – a development star Luke Grimes wasn't initially sold on when it was pitched to him.

"My first gut reaction was, ‘I hate that idea’, because it just didn't even compute," he told Radio Times. "There was no Kayce without Monica. That was their whole arc – this sort of Romeo and Juliet love story. They were two halves that made the whole, so I couldn't wrap my head around it at first.

"But, little by little, I started to realise that they had everything they'd ever wanted. If they were going to stay together, raise Tate and live on the ranch, then there were no more stories to tell. In that case, we should just leave them alone and let them be happy. So there were only a couple of options for removing the possibility of that life, and this was the only way to tell a new story."

And there's certainly been no shortage of drama to keep Kayce occupied, which is just how Grimes likes it.

"When I read the script in 2017 for the first time, I remember thinking, if I don't get to play this guy, it's going to be the one that got away," he said. "It'll be the biggest heartbreak of my career. I'll think about this for the rest of my life. So the fact that I got it was a dream come true. It's very easy for me not to take it for granted, because I do love playing this guy.

"Obviously there are times when I think about it all at once and think, ‘Oh my God, how many more years? This is crazy, and it's a lot of work.’ But then I remember this is Kayce, so I'm good. I get to be in this beautiful place in the mountains, and it's just awesome. It's everything I wanted to play as a young actor and as a boy, all rolled into one."

So, will Grimes get to continue living out that dream in another chapter of Marshals?

Read on for everything you need to know about season 2.

Season 2 of Marshals has been confirmed.

On the announcement of the series renewal, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement: "Marshals delivered a breakout performance, capturing a massive audience across platforms and quickly establishing itself as one of TV's most powerful new series.

"The overwhelming viewer response speaks to the strength of the Yellowstone world, the bold character driven storytelling from the creative team and the dynamic cast performances led by Luke Grimes."

When could Marshals season 2 be released?

Logan Marshall-Green, who plays Cal, told TV Insider that production on season 2 was about to begin and that "we're dogging, right out of the gate, about seven, eight pages a day".

That suggests the next instalment could arrive in 2027 – possibly around March, in line with season 1. But if things move as quickly as Marshall-Green signals, perhaps we could be in for an early surprise.

Grimes also teased "a big ol' cliffhanger" at the end of season 1, with Marshall-Green adding that season 2 will "pick up right where we left off, literally and figuratively".

"No rest for the wicked," he added.

Which cast members could return for Marshals season 2?

Naturally, Luke Grimes is expected to reprise his role as Kayce Dutton.

But there's a question mark over Cal, played by Logan Marshall-Green. It was recently revealed that he has a rare form of lung cancer, so it remains to be seen what his future holds. We'd expect him to return for season 2, with the character likely to undergo treatment, but there's no guarantee he'll survive.

And we could also be saying goodbye to Andrea Santos (Ash Santos), who may relocate to DC.

As for the rest of the cast, the following stars could all return:

Arielle Kebbel as Belle SkinnerTatanka Means as Miles KittleMo Brings Plenty as MoBrecken Merrill as Tate DuttonGil Birmingham as Thomas RainwaterBrett Cullen as Harry GiffordEllyn Jameson as Dolly WeaverMorgan Lindholm as Maddie

    Marshals airs on Paramount+.
