Legendary rock band Pearl Jam has had several shake-ups over the years, and it's time for one more.
Throughout their inception in 1990, the Seattle musicians have cycled through several new drummers before Matt Cameron joined the group in 1998. What began as a temporary fill-in as a favor, Cameron played with the band for 27 years before putting down his drumsticks for one last time in July 2025.
Since Cameron's shock exit last year, fans have been speculating who his replacement would be. Just last month, the band confirmed, per American Songwriter, that they were still to find a new drummer. However, it looks like things have changed.
"I love the mystery of it all. It’s so exciting,” guitarist Stone Gossard said of the band's next iteration during an interview on SiriusXM’s Pearl Jam Radio. “There’s not enough mystery in the world. I think the band is very excited that we’re actually getting to play."
The band hasn't played a live show since Cameron's departure, making their upcoming festival appearance an extra special one. They're set to headline the final night of the Ohana Festival, which takes place from September 25 through 27 in Dana Point, California, and was founded by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedderin 2016. This year, the festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary, with Vedder performing a solo headliner set on the opening night. Tyler Childs is set to headline the second night of the three-night celebration.
"It’s been a while and the fact that we get to do it at Ohana makes it even doubly exciting," Gossard explained. "And the fact that nobody knows who’s going to play drums with us even makes it triply exciting. So, it’s our mystery wrapped in an enigma and we’re relishing in it right now."
Whether it remains a mystery until the end of September remains a mystery in itself, but fans have enjoyed speculating on the "Black" hitmaker's newest addition.
Pearl Jam are known for redefining the grunge genre. Their debut single "Alive" was released in July 1991, and the track broke records, spending a mammoth 61 weeks on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.
