Robert Goss of Chapel Hill won $100,000 off a $3 lottery ticket last week, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced Wednesday. Goss bought his ticket online and matched all five numbers in that day’s Powerball draw to win $50,000, which was later doubled to $100,000.
Goss collected his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh Wednesday. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $72,011. He says he plans to use his winnings to pay bills and invest.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot is currently at a $113 million annuity or $49.5 million in cash. According to the lottery, the odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
Powerball is one of several draw games in North Carolina where players can either buy physical tickets at a retail location or play online through the lottery website or on its official app. The North Carolina Education Lottery says education programs in Orange County received $8.2 million in support from lottery funds in 2025.
