Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant knows ball.
Bryant, the premier free-agent addition from a busy Bears offseason, breaks down a successful Super Bowl blitz deployed by the Seattle Seahawks against New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in a way that is informative and entertaining. You’ve just gotta watch it:

— Film Watchers (@Filmwatchers1) May 18, 2026I loved this exchange with Coby Bryant explaining this Devon Witherspoon blitz from last February’s Super Bowl:
Filmwatchers1: What do you know about this blitz going into the game?
Coby Bryant: Cover zero. First things first, get your mind right because you know it’s mano-y-mano, so that’s the biggest thing with that. This whole prep is holding the look and not giving it away too much. Spoon’s elite player, elite blitzer, too. He timed it up pretty well and I just tried to hold my shell as much as possible and don’t get beat vertically.
Filmwatchers1: When the Patriots aligned in this 3 by 1 set on these third downs, they never ran the hitches and stuff. Is that what you guys were seeing on film before the week?
Bryant: Yeah. Honestly, if it was going to be quick-game, you can tell right away with his mannerisms and his drop back. If he was going to catch and throw, it would be quick-game right now, and that’s something we didn’t see out of this look. So we’re just heating him up with pressure.
A couple of takeaways from the footage above. Firstly, I feel like I’ve learned a little more about football thanks to Coby Bryant’s breakdown. Secondly, because of that, I am starting to get a better grasp on what the Bears saw in the safety and why they made signing him a priority signing in free agency. And, thirdly, I wonder if Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen can rip that play straight from Mike Macdonald’s playbook. Could the Bears deploy Kyler Gordon in this fashion? Stay tuned…
© Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesI’m starting to understand what the Bears saw in Coby Bryant
Coby Bryant proving that he knows ball is exactly the type of content I needed to see on a Tuesday in the offseason to get my juices flowing. Bears fans (present company included) will understandably miss Kevin Byard III and Jaquan Brisker. Those safeties were major players in the team’s successful 2025 season. But Bryant is the type of playmaker who can carry the torch and make a name for himself as a member of the Bears.
Colleague Patrick Flowers laid out why Coby Bryant was a priority addition for the Bears’ defense back in March. In case you missed that post when it first dropped, you should give yourself some time to give it a thorough read. I understand that things can get lost in the shuffle during the transactional periods of the NFL. Things move so quickly that it can be hard to take some time to sit down and dig into the news when the next breaking story is just one push notification away.
Bryant’s athleticism and playmaking ability at multiple positions made him an intriguing target for the Bears in free agency. His track record of production in Seattle was encouraging, as was his play on the Seahawks’ Super Bowl championship-winning team. But the levels of football intelligence he shows while breaking down the play above make me believe that he can keep up with his high standard of play throughout the duration of his multi-year deal with the Bears.
