ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With summer vacation just over a month away for students in Rochester, the City of Rochester has released its lineup of summer activities for youth.
The lineup includes camps at R-Centers, swimming at public pools, sports programs, and the BizKid$ entrepreneurship camps. There are also some summer activities for adults. You can see a complete list and sign up here. Here’s your guide to some of the activities happening from Monday, June 29, through Friday, Aug. 21:
R-Center activities
R-Centers will hold activities from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and will serve children and teens breakfast and lunch. For kids 6 to 17, there’s the “Summer Play Days” series, with activities including hiking, biking, swimming, crafting, gardening, and field games.
For kids ages 12 to 16, there’s the “Hope Heatwave Summer Sports Weeks”, where they can try multiple sports, including basketball, volleyball, baseball, football, pickleball, ultimate frisbee, and cheer. You can see a list of R-Centers here.
Youth camps
R-Centers and other places in Rochester will hold weekly camps. That includes R-Camps, where youth ages 6 to 11 can take part in outdoor activities, arts, dance, and nature exploration. The camps are happening at Lake Riley Lodge, Genesee Valley Field House, or the brand-new Maplewood Nature Center that will open this summer.
Youth can also take part in the BizKid$ entrepreneurship camps to learn how to start and manage their own business. The program is free to city residents. The July 6 to July 10 session is for ages 10 to 13. The July 20 through July 24 is for ages 14 to 19.
In addition, there’s the My Brother’s Keeper Summer Scholars Program, where youth ages 12 to 14 can build skills in leadership, financial literacy, job readiness, health and wellness, and conflict resolution over the course of four weeks. It runs from July 13 through Aug. 6.
Public pool and spray parks
The City of Rochester is set to open its ten spray parks on Friday, May 22. You can find your nearest spray park here. In addition, the city says its public pools and beaches will be fully staffed with lifeguards this summer. People can cool off at the outdoor pool at Genesee Valley Sports Complex, Avenue D, or the indoor pool at the Trenton and Pamela Jackson R-Centers.
Summer recreation for adults
There’s more than just activities for kids this summer. The city is organizing adult sports leagues and lessons. That includes basketball at the Ave. D and Ryan R-Centers. It also includes beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels of tennis lessons at Genesee Valley Park Sports Complex and Cobbs Hill Park. There’s also the Hope R-Center’s Game Night and Dart League and the Paint and Bake Ceramics at the Edgerton R-Center.
