La Jolla baseball and softball teams win dual league titles

LA JOLLA – La Jolla won a heart-stopping 7-6 thriller at Lincoln on May 15 to capture an elusive City League baseball championship. Their second league title in five years, the Vikings’ trophy couples with the LJHS softball team’s title behind power-hitter Jacey Taylor that was won a week earlier.

“We always have to make it hard. It’s been this way all season,” said Vikings baseball assistant Johnny Agbulos in the dugout during the rugged bottom of the seventh, when the host Hornets rallied to score five runs and scare the begeebers out of La Jolla before dropping the one-run decision.

Lincoln rightfielder Dom Mendoza, who pitched in all three games between the Vikings and Hornets last week, crushed his third home run in the trio of contests onto the roof of the Lincoln gym beyond right field to pull his team to within 7-6.

LJHS coach Gary Frank called on sophomore ace Charlie Smith to come in for Andrew Cardenas, who had pitched six and 2/3 innings of gutsy ball, to close out the last out. More commonly, Smith, a lefthander, has been a brilliant starter, going 3-1 in the City League with a microscopic 0.52 ERA.

The Viking batters piled on in the top of the fourth, taking a 6-0 lead, when they scored five runs on a bases-loaded walk to Carter Strauss, a laser off the first baseman’s glove by Harper Lane, a sacrifice fly by Charlie Martin, and a single to right by Ryan Khourajian.

Over on the Vikings’ softball field, Taylor, a senior first baseman, broke the school record for home runs in a season with three circuit clouts on May 14, giving her 13 for the season. She tied the career mark, also held by Emmy Cardenas (2000-2003), of 27 home runs. She will have more chances in the playoffs. Taylor is hitting the ball at a blistering .652 clip, with 66 RBIs and 15 doubles.

Behind her at shortstop, and the reliever who follows Taylor in most games in the pitching circle, sophomore Ella Pearl is batting .521, heading the defense, and playing superlative ball with her glove herself.

Alongside Pearl in the infield, third baseman Ellie Thomson ranks third on the team in batting average at .493 in what portends to be an all-star left side of the infield for the next couple of years.

Other strong contributors have been junior catcher Aviv Laska, hitting .365, and senior Savannah Putnam, who patrols centerfield, bats leadoff, and carries a .348 average.

The Vikings (8-0 to sweep the Central League) have won 10 games in a row entering this week’s (May 20) CIF Div. IV playoffs, looking for a long run in the postseason.
