Iconic ‘70s rocker Ritchie Blackmore built his career on life on the road. But now, the legendary guitarist says even traveling short distances has become a serious challenge.
In an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock shared on Sunday, May 17, the legendary Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist revealed that a frightening bout of vertigo forced the cancellation of several recent Blackmore's Night shows and has left him reconsidering future travel plans altogether.
“I woke up one morning when we were on tour and I had what is called vertigo,” Blackmore explained. “I don't recommend it to anybody. It was the worst thing I've ever been involved with.”
The 81-year-old musician described the episode as so severe that he lost control of his balance and feared something far more serious was happening. “You think your whole world is ending right there,” he said.
Blackmore explained that the condition returned shortly after he arrived back home, leading him to rethink the physical demands of touring at his age. “I've found that at my age, being 150, that you know, it's time to kind of pull back on touring,” he admitted. “I do not like traveling anymore.”

According to Blackmore, even traveling long distances now affects his equilibrium, something he believes may connect back to childhood motion sickness and anxiety surrounding travel.
The latest update comes after Blackmore previously revealed additional health struggles, including debilitating ocular migraines, chronic back issues, and even a heart attack he reportedly suffered around 2023.
But despite the setbacks, Blackmore made it clear that he has no desire to stop performing completely. Instead, he hopes to continue playing shows much closer to home on Long Island. “I want to be on stage. I want to play,” he said. “But I want to play within the radius of, like, 30 miles or 40 miles.”
