Forgotten Reality Show, Which Caused Multiple Broken Bones, Ranked Most Dangerous Series of All Time

When you think of dangerous reality competition shows, you might think of survival series like Naked and Afraid or Survivor. However, the series that TV Line recently ranked the ‘Most Dangerous Reality TV Show’ of all time was about winter sports. It was a British television series called The Jump, which aired from 2014 until 2017.

The competition show was about celebrities trying to master a variety of different winter sports, including ski cross, bobsleigh, skeleton, and giant slalom. “The show resulted in 34 injuries, meaning more than half of its contestants were hurt,” TV Line reported. “Injuries included a dislocated shoulder, a knee injury that required surgery, a broken arm, and a broken leg. Several contestants claimed that their injuries prevented them from working, and gymnast Beth Tweddle, who broke two vertebrae and required spinal surgery, sued the show for damages.”

The host, Davina McCall, spoke about one of the injuries in a 2015 news release, saying, “Donal [MacIntyre] turned up literally bleeding from the lip and scraped all down his face, and I said ‘Oh my God, what’s happened to you now?’ And he said, ‘I just slipped doing a practice jump.’ And he left his face on the ice because it was so cold. He lifted up his face and half of his skin just stayed on the ice. I know it’s not funny, but he was laughing too. Even though the plane was like an air ambulance on the way home, they all loved it. The people who take part in this program are so brave and brilliant, and there’s such a supportive atmosphere surrounding it. It’s a really positive program, which is another thing I love about it.”

Louise Hazel, a contestant on the show during season two, also discussed how intense the process was when speaking with Female First. “You get thrown in at the deep end,” she said. “The first day in Austria we were literally thrown headfirst down an Olympic skeleton course - the training is about survival and taking one day at a time!"

Hazel was also asked whether she was nervous competing in the events, since so many competitors were getting injured. "Of course,” she said. “Nerves are a natural part of competition at any stage and I am no different just because I've competed at the highest level. But it's nerves that gets you injured - it's a failure to not know your limits and listen to your body.”
