The CIF San Diego Division 2 Section Championships raced over the weekend, and the Mount Carmel girls and the Cathedral Catholic boys won the respective meets with both finishing very close.

    The Mount Carmel girls team swam a very close meet against the La Costa Canyon girls team that saw the two teams finish just 14 points apart.

    Mount Carmel started the meet off strong with a win in the 200 medley relay courtesy of Katie Diep (25.53), Catherine Bowe (29.01), Kadence La (26.51), and Jillian Launer (25.03). They swam a time of 1:46.08, touching just over two seconds ahead of the 2nd place team from the Academy of Our Lady Peace, who swam 1:48.06.

    La Costa Canyon freshman Aubrey Martinez won the 200 IM, touching in 2:03.05. She split 27.14/32.47/34.07/29.37 to set a new lifetime best, taking two seconds off the 2:05.24 she swam at the Winter Juniors Championships in December.

    While Martinez had a massive drop in the 200 IM, her 100 breaststroke was the best swim on the girls’ side of the meet. The freshman swam 1:01.63 to break the Division 2 record in the event. This is the 31st ranked 13-14 girls 100 breaststroke time in history.

    Mount Carmel senior Kadence La won the girls’ 100 fly in 56.56, dropping a second from the 57.20 she swam at the 2025 Section Championships.

    The final event won by either team was the girls’ 100 backstroke which went to Catherine Rowe, a Mount Carmel senior. She swam 54.62 to touch just over two seconds ahead of junior teammate Katie Diep. Rowe, who is committed to Texas Christian University for the fall, was about a second off her lifetime best 53.44, which she swam at this meet her junior year.

    Point Loma, who ended up finishing 7th overall on the girls side, had one two-event winner, senior McKenna Carroll. She started with the top time in the 200 freestyle, touching in 1:50.89 to add a little more than a second from the 1:49.38 she swam last season. In the 100 free, she set a new personal best 50.87, dropping from the 50.98 she swam in March.

    Carroll is committed to swim at UCLA in the fall.

    Boys Meet Recap

    The boys’ meet was a little less close than the girls’ meet, but Cathedral Catholic won the title by 21 points over Sage Creek, 16 of which were picked up in the final event.

    Cathedral Catholic won two individual events and two relays. Their first win of the meet came in the boys’ 50 freestyle, where sophomore Max Davies stopped the clock in 20.51 to win the event by six tenths over Sage Creek junior Bruce Snyder. This swim was a tenth drop from the 20.61 he swam at the Speedo Winter Juniors meet in December.

    They also won the 500 freestyle with another sophomore, Diego Dantas. He swam 4:35.09 in the final to come in a little more than two seconds ahead of La Costa freshman Andrew Wilson‘s 4:37.63 in 2nd. This was a massive drop from the 4:44.46 he swam in April of 2025.

    Cathedral Catholic also won the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. In the 200 free relay, the team of Max Davies (20.63), Braylen Axline (21.33), Diego Dantas (22.98), and Trenton Van Dillen (21.25) swimming 1:25.29.

    In the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Max Davies (46.69), Braylen Axline (46.74), Colin McPhail (46.62), and Eamon Bruhn (46.69) swam 3:06.74 to pick up the final event win of the meet.

    There were two dual-event winners, with one of them breaking a section record and both breaking a Division 2 record. Classical Academy senior Braden Guzman won both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. His 200 IM was a new section record time of 1:46.68. This took a little more than a second off his previous record time of 1:47.93 from prelims. Coming into the meet, his lifetime best was 1:49.04 from Winter Juniors.

    In the 100 breast, he swam 54.52 to set a new Division 2 record and personal best time. He took three tenths off his previous best of 54.84 in February of 2026. He is headed to Southern Methodist in the fall.

    Point Loma junior Alex Pletcher was the other two-event winner. He swam 1:37.22 in the 200 freestyle, adding about two seconds from his best 1:35.14, which he swam in February. In the 100 fly, he stopped the clock in 48.28, a new Division 2 record time. This swim was about three tenths off his best of 47.95 from February. Pletcher is committed to Stanford for 2026.
