Antonelli won’t ‘nuke’ Mercedes team in title fight with Russell - Palmer

With Mercedes suddenly finding itself at the sharp end of a championship fight again, questions are already circling about how long the calm can last inside the garage – but former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes the answer is simple: don’t expect an explosion anytime soon.

At the centre of it all is championship leader Kimi Antonelli, whose blistering start to the season has stunned the paddock. With three wins from the opening four races, the 19-year-old has surged 20 points clear of teammate George Russell – a position that, in most title fights, would already be breeding tension.

But so far, Mercedes’ internal atmosphere remains strikingly intact. And Palmer thinks that is no accident.

‘No nuke’ approach as Antonelli-Russell battle simmers

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Palmer suggested Antonelli is not yet in the mindset of turning intra-team rivalry into outright warfare – even if the championship stakes continue to rise.

“He [Antonelli] is young. He's out of contract at the end of the year currently, which seems amazing right now,” Palmer told the F1 Nation podcast.

“I don't think he's going to nuke the team by going all acrimonious on George for the gain of seven points or 10 points, or whatever the swing might be, at least at this stage.

“Maybe, if they're close in September, October, we'll start to see what the real Kimi is like at that point.”

It is a telling phrase – “nuke the team” – but Palmer’s point is less about aggression and more about maturity. In his view, Antonelli is not yet prepared to sacrifice harmony for marginal gains, especially this early in what could become a long title campaign.

Wolff’s balancing act and echoes of Mercedes’ past

Mercedes is no stranger to internal championship warfare. The memory of the brutal Lewis Hamilton -Nico Rosberg era still looms large, when friendship gave way to friction in one of Formula 1’s most intense teammate rivalries.

Yet Palmer believes the Brackley squad’s team principal Toto Wolff is far better equipped this time around – and far less likely to allow the situation to spiral.

“The other thing is, I don't see Toto favouring Kimi in the same way that Helmut Marko was absolutely in Sebastian Vettel's camp at Red Bull,” he said.

“Toto will be completely fair, because he's had this experience as well with Rosberg and Hamilton. He'll have a better idea in his head how he's going to manage it.

“And right now, having a 19 year old as a championship leader, at least in that sense, will make it so much easier than the last time he did it.”

For now, Mercedes appears to be walking a tightrope with unusual ease: two drivers fighting for a world title, yet still operating without visible tension.

Palmer’s verdict suggests that calm may last a while longer — but as history has shown at Mercedes, harmony in a title fight is rarely permanent.
