Ice Cube and Mike Epps are gearing up to celebrate three decades of Friday. The legendary rapper and stand-up comedian will honor the 30th anniversary of their beloved big screen comedy on July 17 with a hip-hop/comedy show at the Long Beach Amphitheater.
The Everyday’s Friday: Lyrics, Lougin’ and Laughing show will feature an as-yet-unannounced lineup of comedians, as well as special musical guests Warren G and the Geto Boys’ Scarface. In a statement announcing the one-off gig, Cube said, “Friday has always been about and for the fans who made it a classic and kept it alive for nearly 30 years. To be able to step back out there with Mike Epps and bring that energy to the stage for a one-night-only experience in Long Beach is special. This show represents the beginning of the next chapter.”
A Live Nation pre-sale will kick off on Thursday (May 14) at 10 a.m. local time, with fans encouraged to sign up for LN’s free All Access membership to gain entry. A general on-sale will open on Friday (May 15) at 10 a.m. local time here.
The event will also feature a costume contest for fans who dress up as their favorite Friday characters, with a $2,000 first place cash price and an exclusive meet and greet, as well as a $1,000 second prize and $500 third prize.
“Every day for the last 30 years someone has told me how much they loved the Friday franchise and how much the characters mean to them,” Epps said about the 1995 buddy stoner comedy directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Italian Job) and written by Cube and DJ Pooh that also starred Nia Long, Tiny Lister, Regina King, Bernie Mac and John Witherspoon. “To reunite with Cube and bring this one night only experience to the fans is incredible.”
To date, the film has spawned the 2000 sequel Next Friday — which featured Epps’ debut in the franchise — and 2002’s Friday After Next, as well as the animated series Friday: The Animated Series. Cube has been talking about a fourth episode, tentatively titled Last Friday, for several years, including last summer, when both he and Epps said a deal is in the works for another episode.
Cube took the field at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday (May 12) to throw out the first ceremonial pitch to a mask-wearing catcher who turned out to be none other than Day-Day himself, Epps; the special moment came on Ice Cube bobblehead day at the stadium.
