ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Twins Kacee and Thierry Sotile are being honored for helping to save their grandmother when she collapsed while gardening.
The two sixth graders at the Aquinas Institute are among this year’s recipients of the Do the Right Thing awards. The twins were home during a hot day last summer. Their grandmother, Monika, was outside gardening when she collapsed. She tried to crawl to the door for help but became unconscious.
The kids heard a noise and acted quickly once they found her. Kacee ran to a neighbor to call her dad and 911, while Thierry stayed with her. Monika was treated for dehydration and made a full recovery.
Thierry: “I was kind of shocked and like kind of like scared because I thought something was going to happen.”
Kacee: “I was just really scared because we didn’t know what the noise was so I just got really scared.”
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here.
