Which teams have scored the most goals in a single UEFA Champions League season, and who holds the record for the most goals in a UCL group stage? We look back at the most lethal teams in the competition’s history.
Which Teams Have Scored the Most Goals in a UCL Season?
Barcelona (1999-00): 45 Goals
Barcelona hold the record for the most goals scored in a single UCL season, with 45 in the 1999-00 campaign. Helped by the fact that the format that season saw more games played (they played in 16 of a possible 17 matches), their tally has not been replicated before or since.
Barça were knocked out in the semi-finals by Valencia, but not before 13 different players scored for them (excluding own goals) – only Real Madrid in 2001-02 (14) and Borussia Dortmund in 2016-17 (15) have had more different goalscorers in a single season. Rivaldo was Barcelona’s top scorer in 1999-00 with 10 goals – finishing joint-top of the goal rankings alongside Madrid legend Raúl and Mário Jardel of FC Porto.
Unsurprisingly, given the number of games they played, Barcelona’s games witnessed 68 goals overall – the most of any club in a Champions League season – because they conceded 23 goals themselves.
Paris Saint-Germain (2025-26): 44 Goals
Paris Saint-Germain’s 6-5 aggregate win over Bayern Munich in the 2025-26 semi-finals took them onto 44 goals ahead of the final showdown with Arsenal in Budapest on 30 May.
The Ligue 1 side are now just one away from the all-time record number of goals scored in a single UCL season by a team – Barcelona’s 45 in 1999-00.
As they finished outside the top eight places in the league phase, PSG were handed two more games to accumulate goals, participating in the knockout stage play-off round against fellow French club Monaco, winning 5-4 on aggregate.
Bayern Munich (2025-26): 43 Goals
Bayern Munich scored 43 goals in 14 games across the 2025-26 UCL campaign before their run in the competition ended at the semi-final stage.
The Bundesliga club were knocked out by PSG – another high-scoring side – in the semis following a highly entertaining tie that ended 6-5 on aggregate to the French team.
Harry Kane scored 14 of their goals (32.6%) on their runs to the semi-finals, but the England captain’s goals weren’t enough to give them the trophy.
Barcelona (2024-25): 43 goals
Barcelona scored 43 goals in the 2024-25 Champions League campaign, and could have gone on to break the record had they not suffered defeat to Inter Milan in the semi-finals. Admittedly, their tally was helped by the new format of the competition, with an expanded league phase giving each team eight matches rather than six.
Seven of their 43 goals came in the monumental semi-final tussle against Inter, as they drew the first leg 3-3 at home before succumbing to a 4-3 defeat at San Siro and losing 7-6 on aggregate.
Raphinha was involved in 21 of their 43 goals, scoring 13 and assisting eight more. This equalled the most goal involvements by a player in a single Champions League season, drawing level with Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally in 2013-14 at Real Madrid.
Bayern Munich (2019-20): 43 Goals
Bayern Munich scored 43 goals on the way to lifting their first UEFA Champions League trophy in seven years, back in 2019-20. In a Covid-disrupted season, their 1-0 final win over PSG was both the first to be played behind closed doors and the latest to be played in any season (23 August).
Twenty-four of their goals (56%) came in the group stage. Excluding the 2024-25 league phase, in which Barcelona scored 28 times from eight games, only Paris Saint-Germain in 2017-18 (25) scored more goals in a single group stage campaign. Robert Lewandowski scored 15 of their goals in this season, netting 35% of their total in his 10 appearances.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the competition this season was restructured to have single-leg quarter and semi-finals, meaning that Bayern only played 11 games. Their average goals per game of 3.91 is the most by a side in any complete UCL season – had they played the usual 13 games that season on the way to their title, they might well have broken the outright goal record.
Real Madrid (2013-14): 41 Goals
Real Madrid sealed their 10th UEFA Champions League crown in 2013-14, achieving ‘La Décima’ by beating Atlético Madrid 4-1 in the final after extra-time. Not only were they the first team to score four times in a UCL final since Milan in 1993-94, but they also ended the season with 41 goals.
Over half (21) of their goals this season came in the knockout stages, which was one more than they scored in the group stage (20). Seventeen of their goals (41%) were scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, who broke the single-season UCL scoring record – their next best scorer (Gareth Bale) only posted six goals, which was 11 fewer than the Portuguese.
Liverpool (2017-18): 41 Goals
Liverpool scored 41 goals on the way to reaching the Champions League final in 2017-18.
Fourteen of their goals came in just two of their group stage matches, as they beat Maribor 7-0 away from home before replicating the scoreline at Anfield less than two months later in the rout of Spartak Moscow. Both feature in our list of the biggest wins in UCL history.
Three Liverpool players reached double figures for goals in this campaign. The lethal front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané each grabbed 10 goals, but it wouldn’t help Liverpool to the title – they eventually lost 3-1 in the final to Real Madrid in Kyiv.
Other Teams to Have Scored 35+ Goals in a UCL Season
Paris Saint-Germain (2024-25): 38 goals Real Madrid (2016-17): 36 goals Real Madrid (1999-00): 35 goals Real Madrid (2000-01): 35 goals Real Madrid (2001-02): 35 goals Real Madrid (2011-12): 35 goals Barcelona (2011-12): 35 goals Atlético Madrid (2025-26): 35 goalsWho is the Highest Scoring Team in a UCL Group Stage?
Barcelona technically set a new record for this statistic in 2024-25, but it all depends on whether or not you consider the new league phase one big group. Hansi Flick’s side scored 28 times across their eight games, six more than any other side in the competition’s group/league stage.
Paris Saint-Germain scored 25 group stage goals in the 2017-18 Champions League, which is a record in the old format for the UCL group stage (six games). Nearly half (12) of these goals came against Celtic, whom they beat 5-0 away and 7-1 at home. Neymar scored in all but one of their six group stage games, scoring six times and assisting three more, with five of these goal involvements coming against Celtic.
Their prolific goalscoring record didn’t help them in the knockout stages, however – they were sent out of the competition in the round of 16 by eventual winners Real Madrid after a 5-2 aggregate defeat.
PSG’s tally was only two more than Liverpool that season, who scored 23 in the group stage – the third highest tally in the old format, also behind Bayern Munich’s 24 in 2019-20. Arsenal also scored 23 goals in the 2025-26 league phase, but across eight games.
