Hamilton demands Formula 1 drivers get ‘a seat at the table’

Lewis Hamilton has fired a pointed challenge at Formula 1’s power brokers, insisting the sport can no longer afford to keep its drivers on the sidelines when major decisions are being made.

As Formula 1 continues to scramble to refine its controversial new-era regulations, the seven-time world champion has made it clear that those actually driving the cars should no longer be treated as spectators in discussions shaping the future of the sport.

And behind Hamilton’s frustration lies a simple question: how can Formula 1 claim to be building a better product while ignoring the voices of those risking everything behind the wheel?

    Hamilton demands drivers be heard

The 2026 season has already seen a flurry of regulation tweaks after criticism poured in from drivers and fans over the quality of racing during the opening rounds.

Adjustments introduced for the Miami Grand Prix were viewed by some as encouraging progress – but many inside the paddock still believe Formula 1 is merely patching over deeper problems.

While the FIA recently acknowledged the “invaluable input” of drivers when outlining planned 2027 power unit changes, Hamilton highlighted the uncomfortable reality behind the statement: the drivers still hold no genuine influence in the decision-making process.

“All the drivers, we do work together, but the fact is that we don’t have a seat at the table. We do engage with the FIA and Formula 1,” Hamilton said in Miami.

“Formula 1 is more often a little bit more responsive, but being that we’re not stakeholders, we don’t have a seat at the table currently, which I think needs to change."

The Ferrari driver’s comments strike directly at the governance structure of modern Formula 1, where teams, manufacturers and commercial interests largely shape the future while drivers remain reactive rather than influential.

‘Speak to us’ – the need for collaboration

Hamilton also pointed to Formula 1’s heavily criticised Pirelli tyres as an example of where direct driver collaboration could significantly improve the sport.

“I was doing the Pirelli test, and I said to ‘You guys should come and speak to us, collaborate with us. We don’t want to be slagging off the Pirelli tyres, we know you can build a good product,’” Hamilton explained.

“But their feedback will be coming from people who have never driven a car before, so we’re like, ‘Speak to us, we can work together. We can go hand in hand to approach the FIA so we can get a better product’.

“And it’s the same to F1. We’re here to work with them, and we don’t want to be slating our sport. We want the sport to succeed, so we need to be working together more.”

The message from Hamilton could hardly be clearer: Formula 1’s future should not simply be engineered in boardrooms and technical meetings.

According to one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history, the people inside the cockpit need a genuine voice before the next generation of changes is locked in.
