Sunil Gavaskar exposes IPL official’s bad behaviour amid controversial 2026 season

The ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) season is already full of drama, controversies, and heated moments, but now the legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has shared an old story that has shocked one and all.

The former Indian captain was part of the IPL Governing Council during the first three seasons of the league, and at that time, differences and clashes of ego were a very common occurrence.

Recently, Sunil Gavaskar revealed that he once got scolded by an IPL official just because he tried to improve the IPL during the early years of the tournament. When the Little Master was part of the IPL Governing Council, the tournament was still new, and he wanted to collect ideas from players and captains to make the league bigger and more exciting.

So, in his personal capacity, Gavaskar wrote letters to all franchise captains and asked them to share suggestions about how the tournament could improve further. Many captains replied to him, but one particular idea later changed the entire playoff system of the IPL.

How Adam Gilchrist’s suggestion changed IPL Playoff history

The legendary batter revealed that the former Australian captain Adam Gilchrist suggested a format where the teams finishing first and second in the points table should get an extra chance to reach the final. That suggestion later became the famous Qualifier and Eliminator system that IPL still follows today.

Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day: “Most replied, and while there was no major suggestion, the one from Adam Gilchrist recommending rewarding the teams finishing one and two another crack at the title with the Qualifier and Eliminator was a unique one.”

But instead of appreciating the effort, one member from the IPL Governing Council reportedly questioned Sunil Gavaskar for contacting the captains without permission. This left the former Indian captain disappointed as he was only trying to help the IPL grow.

Gavaskar said, “I was pulled up by a member of the governing council, who asked with whose authority I had written to the franchise skippers for their suggestions. I told him that I had written in my personal capacity as a former captain and player with the sole intention of seeing how we could make the IPL even better and didn’t need anybody’s permission to write to them.”

Governing Council accepted the Playoff idea

He also explained that the IPL Governing Council was free to either accept or reject the suggestions. Eventually, they accepted the playoff idea, and today it has become one of the biggest reasons why teams fight so hard to finish in the top two.

The cricket pundit added, “It was now up to the Governing Council to accept it or not. They did and now it’s something that each franchise tries to do. Finish in the top two so they can get another bite of the cherry.”

Gavaskar also shared about how the former IPL officials treated the tournament like their own child and now feel proud after seeing it become one of the biggest leagues in the world.
