University of Alabama and Auburn University release statement regarding Protect College Sports Act

The University of Alabama and Auburn University released a joint statement Monday regarding the Protect College Sports Act.

The Protect College Sports Act, a bipartisan Senate bill sponsored by Sen. Ted Cruz,R-Texas, and Sen. Maria Cantwell,D-Wash., aims to regulate NIL money, limit players to one free transfer and restrict coaches from changing jobs midseason, a process known as the “Lane Kiffin Rule.”

Both universities wrote that they oppose the act and they “urge the Senate not to advance it in its current form.”

The statement said both universities “appreciate Congress’s attention to these challenges and share the goals of creating opportunities for and protecting student-athletes, sustaining women’s and Olympic sports, and promoting fair competition through a single, clear national set of rules.” They added that the bill did not meet that standard.

“In its current form, it solves little of what genuinely challenges college athletics and leaves the central questions to the courts, inviting the very litigation it claims to prevent,” the statement said.

The statement listed four provisions the universities opposed, saying they would “perpetuate instability.” The statement alleged that the bill would undermine enforcement and implementation of rules in House v. NCAA, the court case that approved the creation of NIL and payment from schools to college athletes, that it would establish a federal program to micromanage college athletics and that it would “advance private-equity interests.”

“Alabama and Auburn stand ready to work with their Congressional delegation and Members of both parties on a durable solution that protects student-athletes and preserves the ability of universities to compete and operate responsibly,” the Universities said.

The SEC and Big Ten Conference are also opposed to the legislation, with their statement released June 18 saying that in a 30-minute call provided to Big Ten and SEC chancellors and presidents, Cruz and Cantwell spoke for most of the call, limiting feedback from conference officials.

SEC and Big Ten officials reportedly identified positive elements of the legislation and were encouraged to provide recommendations for improvement but were not able to meet with Senate staff before the revised bill was released.

“Many of the concerns and priorities identified by our universities were not adequately reflected in the revised legislation,” the statement said.

NCAA President Charlie Baker defended the bill Sunday, saying that the conferences were making a mistake opposing the act.
