PHOENIX — Diamondbacks pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez dominated the New York Mets through 8.1 innings on Mother’s Day Sunday, a 5-1 win for Arizona that clinched the series.
Manager Torey Lovullo heard boos from the crowd at Chase Field as he took the ball from Rodriguez at 100 pitches, and the left-hander received a standing ovation for the gem start. A one-out bloop single from Mark Vientos ended Rodriguez’s quest for a complete game.
Rodriguez has thrown at least seven innings in back-to-back starts for the first time since he arrived in Arizona, last doing so in 2023.
His ERA dropped down to 2.25 through eight starts. One year ago, Rodriguez sported a 6.86 ERA through eight starts.
Rodriguez pushed into the sixth inning without allowing a hit. Carson Benge ended the no-hit bid on a floater to center field with one out in the sixth inning.
His efficiency kept the game rolling, as Rodriguez threw 27 pitches in three innings and 46 pitches through five.
He struck out four and allowed just four hits, three walks and the lone earned run across 8.1 innings pitched. It was his deepest career outing after completing the eighth inning in five previous starts, most recently in May 2023 while with the Detroit Tigers.
The Diamondbacks received six-plus innings in every start during their six-game homestand. Five of the six outings were quality starts (six-plus innings, three or fewer earned runs).
The last D-backs pitcher to complete nine innings was Brandon Pfaadt last season, although Arizona lost in 11 innings. The most recent Diamondbacks nine-inning complete game came from Zac Gallen in 2023 at Wrigley Field. The last complete game from Diamondbacks pitching at Chase Field was Tyler Gilbert’s no-hitter in 2021.
Ryan Waldschmidt drives in 3 runs
Left fielder Ryan Waldschmidt, in his second major league start, was the standout offensively.
The top prospect recorded his first three career RBIs on two hits.
Waldschmidt walloped a double to the deepest part of the ballpark in left-center field to give the D-backs a 2-0 lead in the second inning, his first MLB extra-base hit. That drive would have been a home run in 15 ballparks, according to Statcast, as it traveled a projected 404 feet.
In the sixth inning, with two outs, Waldschmidt flared a single to center field to bring home Arizona’s third run, and Ketel Marte poured on with a two-run triple to take a 5-1 lead.
Additionally, Waldschmidt made a leaping catch in the fifth inning, banging into the wall to rob Vientos of a hit.
Between his MLB debut, first start, first hits and a series win all in front of family and friends who traveled in, this was a banner weekend for the 23-year-old.
